Causes of scale appearance Signs of contamination What products can be used? How often should I clean? Rules for cleaning a coffee machine How to clean an automatic coffee machine: step-by-step instructions Methods of decalcification
In order for the coffee machine to last as long as possible and brew delicious, aromatic coffee, it is important to take care of it. It needs to be cleaned and descaled periodically. Find out how to properly clean your coffee machine, how often it should be done, and what products to use.
Causes of scale
All devices that come into contact with water and heat it are susceptible to scale formation. Coffee machines are no exception.
Scale is a white or yellowish solid deposit that is almost impossible to clean off. It consists of mineral impurities contained in water: magnesium and calcium salts. The higher the hardness of the water you use when making coffee, the faster a white coating will form. To reduce it, it is better to use filtered or bottled water, but even in this case, deposits will gradually accumulate. It is important to clean them regularly.
Brand specific descaling agent
Most coffee machine manufacturers sell their own branded descaling products or recommend a specific descaling agent for the machine.
Manufacturers often recommend against using third-party brands or homemade descaling products, especially during the initial warranty period of the machine.
This is because using a recommended descaling product reduces the chance of harmful acids that can cause corrosion to the machine and also void your warranty.
Always ensure that the descaling agent is non-toxic and does not leave any residue. Often, descaling products come in the form of a tablet or liquid solution.
The descaling process is different for each machine. Always follow the instructions provided in the manufacturer's manual. Ideally, repeat this deep cleaning every 3-4 months to prevent nasty deposits from building up and keeping your coffee fresh and rich.
Signs of contamination
Sometimes coffee machines are equipped with special sensors that indicate contamination. Usually in this case, an indicator light on the control panel lights up, indicating that it is time to wash the device. If there is no such indicator, you can understand that it is time to clean the internal parts by several signs:
- the taste of the coffee has changed, it has an extraneous unpleasant taste or smell, it has become bitter or sour;
- there are extraneous sounds during operation, and there is spilled coffee or water on or near the cup tray or coffee pot;
- the working cycle began to take longer than usual, and the finished drink was served in a thin stream;
- a light gray sediment remains at the bottom of the cup;
- There is a white or yellowish coating on the visible parts of the device.
If any of these signs appear, cleaning is necessary. If there are other “symptoms” or malfunctions, it is better to take the coffee machine to a service center for diagnostics. There is no need to try to fix it yourself or continue to use it if it is not working properly.
Why descale your coffee machine?
The composition of clean, tasty water includes certain minerals and trace elements: calcium, magnesium, ferrous, potassium, chloride compounds. When heated, they form a limescale deposit, which gets into the coffee as white flakes and makes it tasteless, and ultimately threatens corrosion of the internal elements. The surface of the scale is porous, and microorganisms and bacteria quickly begin to multiply in it.
The maximum amount of plaque is formed by calcium dissolved in an aqueous environment, so the process of descaling a coffee machine is often called decalcification.
You can determine when it’s time to descale your coffee machine by the following signs:
- The smell of coffee changed, it became unpleasant and musty;
- The coffee is not strong enough or under-brewed;
- The steam pressure dropped noticeably;
- The sound of the coffee machine has changed.
Some coffee machines have automatic limescale check sensors. A flashing red indicator or message on the panel informs the user that it is time to decalcify.
What means can be used?
You can clean your coffee machine using several types of products:
- special liquid cleaning products. They are sold in household chemical departments. They are used to wash the main parts of the device;
- decalcification tablets. Used if limescale has appeared on the parts;
- lemon acid. It is mixed with water at the rate of 30 g per 1 liter. This solution is used for descaling.
Additionally, it is worth checking in the instructions for your coffee machine if there are any special recommendations from the manufacturer on the choice of cleaning products or cleaning methods. There is no need to mix different cleaning products. After using any products, the coffee machine should be rinsed thoroughly. The best way to do this is to run it several times in the coffee preparation or cleaning mode with filtered water.
Why is it worth descaling your coffee machine with citric acid?
Many manufacturers produce special cleaning products for their coffee machines. They can be purchased at large chain stores of household appliances or ordered online. There are specific formulations for coffee machines from Bosh, Saeco, Delonghi and other brands, as well as universal cleaners, liquid or tablets.
We do not recommend using universal products or products from other brands to avoid damaging the internal surfaces of the coffee machine.
Never descale your coffee machine with bathroom or kitchen descalers or kitchen detergents!
The best universal remedy that is guaranteed to be suitable for any coffee machine is citric acid.
- Absolutely harmless to human health;
- Effectively copes even with old scale;
- Does not form toxic fumes when heated;
- 100% environmentally friendly;
- Much cheaper than branded cleaners;
- Sold in all stores and always at hand.
How often should I clean?
The frequency of cleaning depends on two parameters:
- how hard water you use;
- Do you brew a lot of coffee?
With high hardness, limescale deposits may appear after using 60 liters of water, which approximately corresponds to 300 cups of coffee.
The Polaris PACM 2060AC coffee machine has a reminder function about the need to decalcify. In the settings, you can specify the hardness of the water used, after which reminders that you need to clean will appear automatically.
What if you don't descale?
Although calcium and limescale are non-toxic, they can affect the quality of the coffee.
First, a layer of scale can insulate the water and heat source. If the water cannot reach the most favorable brewing temperature, extracting the full flavor from the coffee beans will be futile. In addition, the coffee will not be hot enough.
As soon as the heating output of the boiler decreases, the machine is forced to work harder, which leads to an increase in electricity consumption. A malfunctioning machine will start to rattle and the brewing time will increase as limescale build-up can cause the water flow to be disrupted.
These heating, clogging, and reduced aroma issues degrade the quality of the coffee and can ultimately cause machine failure.
Automatic and semi-automatic coffee machines have a cleaning alert indicator. In production, the coffee machine is set to the highest level of hardness, according to which the number of cups of coffee is calculated, after preparing which it is necessary to decalcify the device (usually about 230-250 cups of coffee). There are no sensors yet that measure and indicate the level of scale formed.
If you ignore the signal about the need for cleaning, the coffee machine may be blocked. But some devices continue to work, giving from time to time a signal about the need for a decalcification process.
Rules for cleaning a coffee machine
The procedure for cleaning a coffee machine depends on its type, design, and also on what kind of dirt needs to be washed. There are several general rules:
- Unless automatic programs are used for cleaning, the appliance can only be cleaned after unplugging it.
- Do not use hard brushes or abrasive cleaners, as well as household chemicals with an aggressive composition.
- First, read the instructions: most often they describe the cleaning procedure.
- It is necessary not only to clean the internal parts, but also to periodically wipe the body and external parts so that they also remain clean.
The procedure for caring for a coffee machine consists of several stages:
- The choice of decalcifying agent - it can be a purchased composition or citric acid, depending on the choice, the proportion of the composition and water is determined;
- Before turning on the unit, all possible particles of coffee beans are removed;
- Next, the hydraulic system is cleaned;
- The hopper is then completely rinsed by starting a coffee brewing program.
There is an option for automatically descaling the product; this function must be provided in the device:
- The container is emptied of coffee;
- Next, water is poured into the container and anti-scale agent is added;
- The auto-cleaning function starts;
- After 10 minutes of operation of the device in this mode, the spout is turned to the right, which releases steam, until the red indicator lights up;
- Then the tray is rinsed from drops, water is poured in and the vessel is placed, and the faucet is turned to the left. This is how the internal cleaning of the machine is carried out;
- Then all that remains is to wait until the green indicators appear, which will notify you that the cleaning of the product has been successfully completed.
This option should be used systematically, but not too often; the housing, outflow and all existing containers and parts must be cleaned.
How to clean an automatic coffee machine: step-by-step instructions
Automatic equipment requires regular maintenance and washing of individual components. The exact cleaning procedure should be described in the instructions. Typically it is done as follows.
Cleaning the infuser
- This is where coffee is brewed and waste, residue, and traces of coffee oils may remain.
- It is recommended to perform cleaning at least 2 times a month or every time after preparing 20–30 cups of drink.
- You need to turn off the coffee machine, open the brewing unit compartment, and remove the container with the tray in which the waste is collected.
- The accumulated waste is thrown away, the remaining coffee is removed from the brewing unit and compartment. You can collect them with a sponge or rag.
- The unit is washed under running water, dried, and replaced. A pallet and waste collection container are also placed in place. The brewing unit compartment is closed.
Cleaning the milk and finished drink units
- The pipelines, milk and steam nozzles, as well as the beverage supply unit must be cleaned every time after completing the working cycle when coffee is brewed.
- If there is liquid on the drip tray, drain it, wash the tray, and put it back in place. Place a container with a volume of about 300 ml on the tray under the nozzles.
- 300 ml of clean water is poured into a separate container and the milk supply hose is lowered into it.
- Turn on the coffee machine, go to the settings menu, select the “Cleaning” mode, and start it.
- The self-cleaning system cleans the milk supply hose, as well as internal nozzles and tubes. In this case, the water will drain into a container on the drip tray.
- Cleaning takes about two minutes. After this, you can turn off the coffee machine.
Cleaning the cappuccino maker
- Performed regularly, as well as when signs of blockage appear (intermittent supply of milk or coffee, extraneous sounds during operation, release of steam when milk is supplied).
- The assembly is removed for cleaning. There are usually locking keys on the sides that you need to press to do this.
- The insert with the jet and spouts is removed from the device.
- Wash the body, insert, and milk supply hose.
- After this, the device must be assembled and installed in place.

Decalcification methods
If you are using an automatic coffee machine, you can clean it from limescale as follows:
- Empty the water tank.
- Prepare a decalcification agent (for example, dissolve a special tablet in water).
- Pour the solution into the reservoir up to the MAX mark.
- Place an empty container under the nozzles through which the finished drink is usually served. Its volume should be enough to collect the solution that you poured into the tank.
- Turn on the device, go to settings mode, start decalcification mode.
- When cleaning is complete, the coffee machine needs to be rinsed again.
Regular cleaning of your coffee machine will help extend its life and also maintain your warranty. You can care for it at home by following the recommendations from the manufacturer's instructions. It is important to do this regularly to avoid the appearance of heavy dirt or large amounts of limescale.
