A morning cup of coffee has long become a real daily ritual for many people. Some people love it for its rich taste and pronounced aroma, while for others the priority is to receive a boost of energy, increase tone and vitality. Connoisseurs of the drink know that the stronger the coffee, the higher the surge of energy.
For those who drink coffee not only for the love of its taste, but also for its invigorating effect, this article will be useful.
What is the strongest coffee
Strength is determined by the amount of caffeine in the beans. The most common of them are Robusta and Arabica.
Robusta is a type of bean with a high (up to 4%) caffeine content. A drink made from robusta has a pronounced bitterness, but does not differ in depth and richness of taste and aroma. Robusta is usually not used in its pure form, only in blends mixed with Arabica beans.
Arabica is a type of bean with a rich taste and rich aroma. The caffeine content in it is half that of robusta. Blends are made either from Arabica beans alone or by mixing it with Robusta.
A mixture of different types is perfect for perking up. And if you want to drink a drink at night, but not suffer from insomnia, it is recommended to choose 100% Arabica varieties.
It is important to know!
- Robusta is stronger than Arabica.
- African varieties are stronger than South American varieties.
- Deep roast beans have a higher caffeine content than medium and light roast beans.
- Prolonged contact of the coffee mixture with water (extraction) promotes a greater release of caffeine.
- Milk and cream, as well as other additives (honey, lemon), reduce the strength of the drink.
The strongest coffee, as is generally accepted, can be tasted at the Dying Wish coffee shop in the USA. The preparation recipe, the composition of the blend and the method of roasting the beans are kept strictly secret, and one cup contains 2 times more caffeine than the strongest espresso.
We are often mistaken
Strength is bitterness
Historically, most consumers have become accustomed to the fact that coffee is a bitter drink and the stronger the bitterness, the stronger it is. There is logic in this, and quite often it is so, but not always.
If you are brewing tart varieties or dark roasted beans, then you will be absolutely right. Here, the bitterer the drink, the stronger it is. But, if you make coffee from medium-roasted aromatic varieties, there will be almost no bitterness in them, although the drink turns out to be quite rich and strong.
“My coffee is not coffee, it lacks strength” - you can often hear from people who are trying varieties with low bitterness in taste for the first time.
Therefore, alas, not everything is so simple, and the bitter taste of coffee cannot be called strength.
Strength is the caffeine content
The same logic applies here as in alcoholic drinks, but it does not apply to coffee.
Yes, strong coffee contains more caffeine and most often the stronger the drink, the more invigorating it is. But let's imagine that you are making espresso from Decaf beans. The espresso will turn out, as always, strong and rich, although there will be no caffeine in it at all.
Top 5 Strong Coffee Blends
- Italian espresso . This blend includes dark Italian roasted Arabica and Robusta beans. The prepared drink has a rich, deep color and a characteristic nutty aroma. It has a high caffeine content.
- Paganini . The blend is suitable for espresso, consisting of one quarter strong robusta and three quarters aromatic Arabica. It is considered one of the strongest coffee blends. The coffee is invigorating, rich and thick.
- Blazer Opera . It contains strong dark roasted Indonesian Robusta, which enhances the strength and adds bitterness to the coffee. Ideal for an invigorating morning espresso.
- Lavazza Grande Ristorazione . A mixed blend containing more Robusta than Arabica. It has a rich and very sharp taste. More suitable for coffee machines than a regular Turkish coffee maker, French press or drip coffee maker.
- Blazer Rosso & Nero . A blend of dry Arabica and washed Robusta. It has pronounced notes of nuts and the aroma of chocolate. Contains a high percentage of caffeine, which invigorates well.

Energizers of the coffee world
The ability to quickly replenish “faded” energy is one of the main criteria when assessing the strength of coffee. The bitter “native” of African Uganda, Robusta, would ideally cope with this task. Its beans contain up to 2.5% caffeine, an alkaloid that is associated with the “invigorating” effects of the drink. However, when brewing robusta beans, which are poor in aromatic oils but rich in organic acids, the result is a rough, watery decoction with acute bitterness and an unexpressed aroma.
Most Arabica varieties contain no more than 1.5% caffeine. Highland varieties lead in its content. The most respected fans of strong (but not bitter) coffee include the following:
· Jamaica Blue Mountain. Tart but not bitter premium Arabica. The nutty flavor of the finished drink smoothly “flows” into a long fruity and nectar aftertaste.
· Indonesia Sulawesi Toraja. Its taste is a unique “interweaving” of roasted nuts, hot pepper and the “sweet” sourness of red apple.
· India Monsooned Malabar. Soft, smooth taste with a subtle citrus sourness, a taste of nutmeg, brown bread with a crispy crust and spices.
· Cubita. Premium segment Arabica grown in the forested mountainous areas of Liberty Island. The “smoky” tones in the taste of the drink are of medium intensity and are very harmonious with a subtle sourness.
Manufacturers usually mix beans of delicate, rich, delicate taste and aroma of Arabica and “strong” Robusta in every sense. Its addition makes the coffee stronger and gives it a piquant “spiciness”.
The strongest recipe
Not only the characteristics of the blend, but also the method of preparation affects the strength of the drink.
The longer the drink is prepared in water, the more caffeine it becomes. Therefore, when prepared in a Turk, drip coffee maker or French press, the drink is stronger.
It is generally accepted that the strongest coffee is espresso. However, it is not. The concentration of coffee in it is 7 grams per 30 ml of water, which provides a rich and dense taste. But if we talk about the strongest coffee, then it is ristretto. The water content in it is half that of espresso, and the grams of coffee are the same. The result is concentrated, strong coffee, enough for one sip.
Reference! You should not put sugar in Ristretto, or add milk or cream. It is not savored, but drank in one gulp to get a charge of instant vigor. This is a kind of “shot drink” in the world of coffee drinks. Ristretto is valued solely for its strength, and not for its aroma or taste.
Ristretto is also sometimes called double espresso. It is always prepared in a coffee machine. You won’t be able to cook it in a Turkish or French press; the technology will be disrupted.
The coffee mixture (at the rate of 7-11 grams per serving) is poured into the coffee machine into a special horn and compacted with a press. After this, the powder must be “soaked” with water for 3-5 seconds in order to better reveal the aroma and taste of coffee. Then the water flow is turned on for 20 seconds, resulting in one serving of coffee with a thick light brown foam, similar in consistency to cream.
Coffee lover's dying wish
Don’t be alarmed, but until recently, when asked what the strongest coffee in the world is, the most sophisticated gourmets would name Death Wish Coffee, which means Dying Wish.
What is this extreme product?
On the packaging there is an ominous outline of a skull and crossbones. Inside it is an original mixture of Indian and Peruvian coffee varieties of organic origin with a complete absence of “synthetics”.
The caffeine content in a cup of Death Wish Coffee reaches 660 mg.
Those who dare to try the unique energy drink note its intense aroma and very “vigorous” taste. But regarding the action, opinions differ. For some, it “charges” them with energy for the whole day without any consequences. For others, an unprecedented rise after a couple of hours was replaced by weakness, similar to that which occurs after a 36-hour lack of sleep.
This option for energy “refueling” would have remained unsurpassed if not for...
How does roasting affect strength?
Roasting gives coffee beans a rich taste and aroma. Typically, beans come in three types of roasting levels:
- low degree of roasting – gives the beans a pronounced sourness, a light coffee aroma and a light brown color of the drink;
- Medium roast – considered the most universal, suitable for any coffee lover. Bitterness is mixed with the taste of sourness, the aroma reveals itself brighter, and the color of the coffee becomes richer and deeper;
- strong degree of roasting - the acid completely disappears, the coffee is bitter, but you can also detect a sweetish taste. The color of the coffee drink becomes almost black.

Sulawesi Toraja
This type of coffee got its name from the Indonesian island of Sulawesi, where in the Toraya region there are plantations that were established by the first Dutch settlers. This variety has become so popular that it continues to be grown in our time. Its aroma is imbued with notes of thick nectar and wet earth, which is characteristic only of Indonesian varieties.
Sulawesi Thoraya is an artificially fermented variety and has a high percentage of caffeine. The grains are processed only in a dry manner, which allows the full bouquet of its aroma to be fully revealed. Espresso based on this variety is very strong and viscous, an excellent option for starting a new day.
Coffee strength scale
The intensity and strength of the drink determine the character of the coffee mixture. To understand the level of intensity, richness of taste and expressiveness of aroma, the following scale is usually used:
- 1–4: delicate taste and light aroma;
- 5–7: balanced rich taste and aroma;
- 8–10: invigorating coffee with a rich aroma and pronounced bitterness.
In order to draw a conclusion about the strength of the coffee mixture, it is necessary, first of all, to clarify the composition of its blend, the country of origin of the coffee beans and information about the degree of roasting. The strongest blend will be one with a predominant content of highly roasted, finely ground robusta. The amount of water added when preparing the drink, as well as the extraction time, will also play an important role in the final strength of the coffee drink.

Why do we experience the invigorating effects of coffee differently?
Most people react to coffee adequately: they drank a cup, felt a surge of energy, and went about their business.
But not all of us are like that. There are people for whom one single cup of coffee causes a very strong effect. Some say that the drink contributes to the appearance of undesirable reactions: tremors in the hands, a feeling of nervousness, increased blood pressure, or “the desire to run, run, run without stopping.” However, this is rare; much more often you can find the opposite reaction: lack of effect.
Some people don’t consider coffee such a good stimulant at all. They can drink three cups at night and fall asleep peacefully. They are annoyed that the drink does not relieve morning drowsiness at all, and they have to find ways to cheer up without coffee.
Indeed, this happens. There may be three reasons for this.
- Natural resistance to caffeine. We all react differently to chemicals entering the body, this is due to the characteristics of our metabolism. For example, one person gets drunk from a thimble of vodka, while another feels intoxicated only after taking a dose that would have left the first one in an alcoholic coma. Also with coffee, the effects of caffeine are perceived differently by people.
- Frequent consumption of coffee. Caffeine gradually becomes addictive. This condition has nothing to do with addiction; it consists of a gradual decrease in the effect of the usual dose with the need to increase it (although addiction to coffee also happens, it is called theism). If you drink an invigorating drink often and a lot, then perhaps it has lost its effect precisely for this reason. You should give it up for a few weeks and think about how to cheer yourself up without coffee during this “break.”
- Incorrect preparation of coffee. Many people prepare it completely incorrectly; they do not understand which varieties are best to choose to make the coffee tasty and tonic.
Cold refreshing coffee with orange
This recipe is especially suitable for the hot season, as it is very tonic.
Ingredients:
- orange – 0.5 pcs.
- sugar – 2 teaspoons
- water – 150 ml
- coffee capsule – 1 pc.
- cloves – 2 pcs.
- ice – 3-4 cubes
- whipped cream
Cut the orange or ripe tangerines into small cubes, add a little sugar and 1 spoon of water. Place all this in a saucepan on the fire and heat it up. As soon as the syrup boils, turn off the heat and strain it through a sieve. Pour ice into a glass and pour in orange syrup. Prepare coffee from the capsule, add cloves and ice, shake in a shaker. Pour coffee into the glass that already contains orange syrup. Garnish with whipped cream.
Coffee grind level
The degree of grinding of coffee is divided into 5 main stages. The type of grinding in this case is determined by the size of the resulting particles, either very small, reminiscent of flour, or larger ones.
Hard (large)
Particles of crushed grains in this case can reach 1 mm in size. They are perfectly suitable for brewing coffee, in other words, making it, for example, in a French press. Firstly, such particles are more easily retained in a similar device, and, secondly, they reveal more characteristics when poured with hot water. In addition, this size is perfect for a drip coffee maker or coffee pot.
This is a universal coffee grinder for a coffee machine. Typically, standard devices work specifically with a similar size, which gives a good taste, and at the same time is easily retained by filters. It's also the perfect grind for a carob coffee maker. In addition, it can be used in the same way as in the case of large particles, since the abilities of both options are not very different.
Small (narrow)
The fine grinding capabilities, unlike the other two, are more limited. It is perfect for brewing a drink in a cezve (or as it is also called, a Turk).
For espresso
This is an ultra-fine version, a finer grind, suitable only for special coffee machines in which espresso is prepared by passing hot steam through crushed beans.
Each type of coffee needs its own grind
Dusty
Another ultra-fine grinding - dusty - is considered the best for making real Turkish coffee or an oriental drink, which is why it is sometimes called “classic grinding for Turkish coffee”. Due to the settling “slurry”, similar coffee seems thicker and somewhat stretchy, which is why it is perceived completely differently.
In addition, from time to time they produce medium-fine coffee grinds for coffee machines, between two degrees of grinding, as recommended from the name. It cannot be said that this is a universal solution, but it can be completely used instead of the first or other option if necessary.
Blends
A mixture of several types of coffee can be given any quality, including high strength and richness. But only professional tasters and baristas know all the intricacies of blending varieties. However, you can find ready-made coffee blends in the store. Often their recipe is a trade secret. Here are the most famous of them:
o Death Wish. This is the strongest coffee in the whole world. This is truly a “Dying Wish” - because one sip of this drink can literally bring you back to life. o Italian espresso - highly roasted beans give the drink fullness and richness. The caffeine level is very high.
On supermarket shelves you can pick up packaging from lesser-known manufacturers. Recently, many companies have put a strength scale on the pack (from 1 to 5), accordingly, five will be the strongest.
The higher the roast level, the stronger the coffee.
All types of coffee are divided into pure and mixed
Mixed are compositions of several types of ground coffee. The grains are combined in order to emphasize the positive properties of one or another type, as well as to mask shortcomings. When mixing, they try to select coffee varieties that reveal and complement each other’s taste properties. Usually they do not combine grains with similar taste properties or, on the contrary, with very polar ones. The mixed form contains from two to fifteen types of ground grains.
Unblemished varieties are varieties that contain only one type of coffee bean. These species bear the names of the area where the coffee trees grew. For example, Brazilian coffee.
What determines the strength of tobacco?
The strength of hookah tobacco is primarily determined by the nicotine content. For example, the Al Fakher package says 0.05%, and the Nakhla package says 0.5%. It follows from this that Nakhla is stronger, and Alfaker is lighter and this option is suitable for beginner smokers.
How strong a product is depends on the percentage of nicotine contained in the tobacco leaf. Each variety contains different amounts of this substance.
Manufacturers of hookah products use one or more varieties of tobacco leaves for production. And before purchasing a large batch, the raw materials are analyzed, determining the nicotine content by one of the criteria:
- 0.6–1% — light (weak);
- 1–2% - medium (average);
- 2–3% - strong;
- 3–4% - extra strong (very strong).
If the raw material contains more than 4% nicotine, then it is unsuitable for the production of smoking tobacco.
The following types of tobacco leaves are used in the production of hookah mixtures:
- Virginia (Virginia) - 1-3% nicotine. Tobacco mixtures that use this raw material are Starbuzz, Serbetli, Al Fakher, Layalina, Haze, Social Smoke, Burn, Argelini, Fumari, Oringо.
- Burley (Burley) - 2-4%. Included in Tangiers, Fusion, DarkSide and Satyr.
- Oriental (Oriental) - 1-2%. This sotr is used in DarkSide and Satyr.
The nicotine content is affected not only by the type of tobacco leaf, but also by the place and growing conditions, assembly time, and drying method. For example, late harvesting and rapid drying make it possible to obtain a higher content of this substance in the raw material. You should also consider which leaves from the bush are used, since on the bush the nicotine content gradually increases from the lower to the upper leaves.
The finished hookah mixture will not have the same nicotine content as the raw material, since the manufacturer uses various processing methods - washing, fermentation, which reduces the amount of this substance.
In the modern tobacco industry, some manufacturers use artificially synthesized nicotine to increase strength. But since such an additive is not cheap, it is practically not used in the mass production of hookah mixtures.
There is an opinion that the strength of a hookah can be adjusted by the way the bowl is filled, by choosing a certain shape and type of bowl, and by the amount of heat. But it is not so. The amount of nicotine in the mixture cannot be increased in this way; its release can only be accelerated or slowed down.
Personal perception
Each smoker will have their own perception of the strength of the same hookah. This depends on factors such as:
- Experience of smoking hookah or cigarettes;
- Smoking after meals or on an empty stomach;
- From a physical or emotional condition;
- From using hookah with alcoholic or non-alcoholic drinks;
- other factors.
But these are subjective indicators and can change every time. Therefore, they must be taken into account in each individual case. It's the same with the perception of tastes.
To find a product with optimal strength for yourself, you need to take into account all of the above. If a novice hookah smoker chooses tobacco of an inappropriate strength, then he will not be able to join the hookah culture the first time.
If you have experience smoking cigarettes, but do not have experience smoking hookah, and you take very light tobacco, then most likely you will not get pleasure from the aromatic smoke. If, on the contrary, you have never smoked anything and took too strong tobacco, then after a strong nicotine hit in the throat, the desire to smoke will disappear by itself. Therefore, you need to start getting acquainted with hookah with a medium-strength product.
Take, for example, Serbetli or Adalya and try to smoke it straight away. If it smokes easily and pleasantly, then you can continue smoking this product or try something stronger. Heavy smoking should not cause an immediate cough. If this happens, then this product is too strong for you and you need to use a lighter tobacco mixture.
After determining the optimal strength, you can begin choosing a tobacco mixture and its flavors.
