Caffè cortado means “to share” in Italian. And this is no coincidence. It is believed that after drinking the drink, your life is divided into 2 parts: before drinking the cocktail and after. Consists of a serving of freshly brewed espresso and baked milk.
An interesting feature is that the drink is called differently in several countries. You will have to take this into account when traveling. Below we look at its name in different countries:
- Catalonia – tayat;
- Cuba – cortadito;
- France - noisette;
- Baskonia - that's it.
Italy is considered the birthplace of the cocktail, but it has gained dizzying popularity in Latin America, Spain and Portugal, where every fourth resident of these countries drinks it at lunchtime. It just so happens that cortado is an afternoon drink. Most likely, this is due to its composition, which does not contain a large portion of caffeine, because at lunch you do not need such a boost of energy as in the morning.
Features of preparing cortado
Italians claim the authorship of the recipe. They also gave the name to the drink. “Cortado” translated from Spanish means to cut, divide. It is believed that the name comes from the fact that adding milk “rips” the uniform thickness of the coffee.
What is needed to prepare the recipe?
- A shot of strong espresso (50-60 ml)
- Equal amount of baked milk.
- Sugar or honey - to taste.
Espresso is poured into a warmed cup. Add sugar or honey - no more than 1 teaspoon, stir. Baked milk is whipped into a soft, moist, not too strong foam. The milk for whipping should be warm, but not hot.
Milk is poured into the drink in a thin stream, the foam is carefully laid on top of the espresso. Since some of the milk goes into foam, very little is added to the coffee.
No need to stir the cortado!
Capsule coffee lovers can find ready-made cortado capsules from various manufacturers.
What is cortado coffee?
First, a little information for those who don’t know what cortado coffee is.
This is the name of a coffee cocktail in which espresso and baked milk are mixed in equal proportions. Sugar is added to the drink to taste, and the cocktail itself is not stirred after adding milk. This is exactly the way to prepare real, classic cortado coffee, as the Italians created it. However, much water has passed under the bridge since then, and the drink has gained worldwide fame. Now, along with the traditional recipe, no less often we come across other variations of the drink, which also turn out to be pleasant and interesting in taste. For example, some people like to replace sugar with honey, while others follow the example of Latin Americans and dilute baked milk with condensed milk in a 1:1 ratio. There are also recipes without baked milk at all, which is replaced with cream.
On a note! This recipe with the addition of cream, by the way, is quite popular among Russian residents.
Translated from Italian, "Cortado" means "Cut", or in our case, rather "divided". The drink is named so for the even division of its ingredients - 1:1, and also because the coffee should not be stirred after adding milk. Many joke that there is another reason why the drink is named so: because your life is divided into two parts - before and after you first tried cortado. But maybe this is not a joke at all? It's worth trying it and checking it out for yourself.
Since the drink has become world famous, this recipe, as well as some very similar ones, has its own name in each country. Be armed when traveling and order your favorite coffee correctly.
- Baskonia - that's it.
- France is noisette.
- Catalonia - tayat
- Cuba - cortadito.
- Latin America - bon-bon (recipe with condensed milk).

Today, the majority of coffee and coffee drinks are consumed in Spain. This has already become a national tradition, an integral part of the country’s way of life.
The Spaniards take the process of drinking coffee extremely seriously, and such coffee drinking can drag on for several hours. The first coffee shop in Spain appeared before the outbreak of the First World War.
Currently, there are a huge number of coffee shops in this country, as well as varieties of coffee-based drinks. But the most popular is cortado coffee, invented in one of the coffee shops in Madrid.

Where and when do they drink cortado?
The recipe is popular in Spanish-speaking countries, especially in Latin America. In Europe it can be found in Spain and Portugal.
Italians only drink coffee with milk before lunch, but Spain has its own opinion on this issue. Cortado, according to proud Spaniards, is an afternoon drink; it is consumed in the afternoon for vigor. Ordering a drink is very easy. In Spain, all you have to do is say to the barista: Un cortado, por favor (Un cortado, por favor) and they will prepare you what you need.
Drink cost
As for the cost, one cup of cortado can be purchased for 150-250 rubles. However, when prepared at home, the cost of the drink will be only about 20 rubles per serving.
On a note! When preparing cortado in a capsule coffee machine, you can get a very good drink, saving both money and time. The price of one serving will be only 25-30 rubles, which is almost as cheap as making cortado at home.
Cortado coffee gained its popularity due to its unique mild taste and unusual layered structure. This delicate drink goes well with honey, which will be appreciated not only by coffee lovers, but also by those with a sweet tooth. In addition, cortado is valued for its delicate effect, which is at the same time invigorating, but does not upset the internal balance, which often happens when drinking coffee drinks that are harsher in their impact, such as espresso. Everyone should try cortado at least once - and you will never be able to forget this amazing, tender taste.
Can you make cortado at home?
Cortado can be prepared at home, without using a coffee machine.
- Brew strong coffee in a cezve at the rate of 2 tablespoons of ground coffee per 100 ml of water. Heat the cezve until the foam rises 2-3 times to make the drink stronger.
- Heat a glass glass in the microwave or under running hot water, then wipe dry.
- Pour 50 ml of coffee into a glass, add and stir sugar if necessary.
- Heat baked milk 4% fat in the microwave. Skim milk does not foam well.
- Measure 50 ml of milk, beat using a hand whisk or mixer.
- Holding the resulting foam with a spoon, carefully pour some of the milk into the coffee. You should get about 2 tablespoons of liquid milk and a cap of foam. If there is more milk left after whipping, then you should not pour the entire volume into coffee, the taste will be too soft.
- Place the resulting foam on top of the coffee.
Your cortado is ready and served without toppings. A good dessert would be custard cakes, candied fruits, baskets with protein cream, as well as a souffle based on milk or cream.
How to properly prepare baked milk?
Baked milk can be bought in almost any store. However, you can cook it yourself. To do this you need:
- Pour the milk into a container and place in a warm oven for 2-3 hours.
- The milk should simmer, but should not be brought to a boil.
- After this, you should add sour cream or cream to the milk - 200 grams per liter.
- Stir the milk, close it tightly with a lid and wrap it with a towel. Leave in a warm room for 2 hours.
Ready! The taste of homemade baked milk is many times superior to the taste of store-bought milk.

Frappe coffee is a wonderful refreshing and invigorating drink during the hot season.
Is it possible for pregnant women, nursing mothers and children to drink coffee with milk?
Expectant and nursing mothers should definitely monitor their menu, excluding all “dangerous” foods. Many people say that drinking coffee is very harmful and it is better to replace it with such healthy and tonic green tea. However, this drink has a much greater supply of caffeine (taine) than in a grain drink and can actively “irritate” the nervous system.
The so-called “decaffeinated coffee” is just a loud name for the drink, because there is a share of caffeine in it, but it is small. As a rule, such coffee does not give the effect of natural strong espresso, but significantly increases cholesterol, which is not desirable for pregnant women or nursing mothers and their children.
More and more often, you can hear from modern pediatricians that you can drink coffee, but in limited quantities. In the case of nursing mothers, this should be done in the intervals between feedings and when the baby has already begun to “get acquainted” with adult food. In the case of pregnant women, it is best to warn yourself against the aromatic drink, as it can provoke a surge in blood pressure and other unpleasant consequences.
IMPORTANT: If you are a nursing mother, under no circumstances drink coffee at night, because your baby can get a “portion of caffeine” through breast milk and not fall asleep for a long time, his condition will be nervous and restless.
Coffee is dangerous for children:
- Increased nervous excitability (hence moodiness, tearfulness, irritability).
- Allergic reaction (rash, abnormal stool)
- Dehydration (coffee has a very good diuretic property).
- Lack of substances in the body (coffee promotes calcium leaching).
Recommendations:
- You should not drink coffee immediately after the baby is born (up to 3 months – for sure!).
- You should drink coffee rarely (maximum 1 cup in the morning)
- You can drink coffee only after full breastfeeding
- Coffee should not be combined with chocolate (it also contains a lot of caffeine).
- If you drink coffee, eat as many calcium-rich foods as possible.
What determines the taste of coffee?
A real cortado should have a rich honey, truly delicate, melted taste. Ideally, it turns out layered: creamy, milky, sweet aftertaste, replaced by coffee bitterness.
In order for the cortado to turn out, it is necessary to use only high-quality roasted and freshly ground coffee beans.
If the grains are not roasted enough, the taste of the drink will be weak and unpleasant, and if the grind is coarser than necessary, the strength will suffer.
You should not use ready-made ground coffee to prepare cortado. It is better to buy coffee beans and grind them yourself. Baked milk must be fresh.
Many coffee lovers note that it is baked milk that gives cortado a strong, sweet, milky taste with a delicate aroma .
Some people prefer to add cream to the drink, which gives it additional calories and a rich milky taste.
For those with a real sweet tooth, we recommend including condensed milk in the cortado recipe. This will give the drink a very sweet, cloying taste that may not suit everyone.

How is it different from coffee drinks?
It is very easy to distinguish a cortado from a latte macchiato, cappuccino or gallon.
Latte can be made from black coffee and milk, whipped into a stable, fluffy foam. At the same time, the amount of milk is several times greater than the amount of coffee used. You can find recipes for making latte coffee in this publication.
For a gallon, use a small amount of brewed, finely ground coffee, and three times as much milk.
The main difference is that for cortado coffee they use only baked milk and high-quality, well-roasted coffee beans of Kenyan varieties. In addition to milk and coffee, you can add chocolate, cream, caramel, etc. to the cortado.
Also, the popular drink of the Nescafe Dolce Gusto brand is well suited for making cortado coffee.
Its range of flavors is very rich, and the capsules in which coffee is produced come in different types: cappuccino, latte macchiato, mocha and, of course, cortado.
You can brew real Americano or espresso in a capsule coffee machine, and then add exactly the same amount of baked milk. You will get a real cortado, prepared yourself, with a surprisingly mild taste.
We also recommend that you familiarize yourself with the rating of the best coffee machines for home in 2022.
Calorie content
Calorie content depends on what kind of milk is used for preparation. It has different fat content - 1 or 4 percent. If you use 1 percent, the calorie content per serving is about 22 calories. When using 4 percent it increases to 42 calories, and with sugar it increases to 65 calories.
If you add 20 percent cream to the classic Cortado, then a cup with a spoon of sugar will add 92 calories. When adding condensed milk, the calorie content reaches 100 calories per serving.
So, Cortado is a soft coffee and milk drink made from strong or medium roasted beans with baked milk, honey or condensed milk. Served in glass glasses. It can be enjoyed any time in the afternoon for a boost of energy, taste and aroma.
