Why do you need a good and high-quality coffee machine? Of course, for aromatic hot coffee in the morning. The process of brewing this wonderful drink is almost completely automated and requires minimal human intervention. The filling of the device implies the presence of many mechanical parts, electronic circuits, as well as a miniature hydraulic system. However, everything soon breaks down and these necessary devices are no exception. When coffee machines break down, there are only two options left: take them to a service center or repair the coffee machine yourself.
What determines the taste of coffee prepared in a French press?
The taste of the drink is influenced by the freshness of the beans, the degree of roasting, the quality of the water, and, of course, the type of coffee.
We talked on the website about how to choose coffee. Now you know how to do it right. In some articles that tell you how to use a French press at home, you will find advice that for this device you need to use only coarsely ground coffee. Actually this is not true.
If you have a nylon strainer with small holes, then you can choose coffee of any grind. The only thing you have to consider is that it will take some effort to push the plunger down when making finely ground coffee.
The taste of French coffee depends more on the freshness of the ground beans. As we said earlier, the best option is to prepare the grains just before cooking. It is then that the taste of coffee will be fully revealed. You will not make real coffee from ready-made ground beans purchased in packaged packs, even if you know how to use and how much coffee to pour into a French press.
Even those who know how to use a French press to make coffee will not make good real French coffee from weathered beans.
Don't forget that the quality of water largely determines the taste of coffee. It cannot be boiled again. And, of course, it is better to take filtered, but not distilled. Don't forget about the temperature: for French coffee it is 90–95 degrees (10 seconds of cooling after boiling).
What type of coffee is better to choose?
A French press is convenient because you can make any type of coffee in it. But the best ones will be the expensive single-origin varieties, such as Kopi Luwak, Jamaica Blue Mountain, and Green Bourbon “St. Helena.”
Today, if you try hard, you can find coffee blends specifically designed for the French press.
The device is also convenient because you can immediately pour spices into it if you like to add them to your drink. Please keep in mind that coffee is prepared very quickly using this method, and not all spices will be able to manifest themselves in such a short time. You can brew the spices in advance and pour the resulting decoction into coffee - use it instead of water.
Why do coffee machines break down?

The principle of preparing drinks
How to properly use a plunger teapot? The instructions are quite simple and clear. The whole process comes down to a few steps:
- To begin, the flask must be thoroughly rinsed with boiling water.
- Pour the tea leaves into the container, and then pour in water at the appropriate temperature.
- The drink should steep for a few minutes. This is the only way it will acquire a rich and unique taste.
- When the drink has brewed a little, you need to lower and raise the piston several times. This will make the taste richer.
The drink is ready. All that remains is to pour it into cups. It is recommended to drain the tea completely. Otherwise, it will infuse and acquire a bitter taste.
What is
A French press for tea and coffee preparation resembles a teapot in appearance. Consists of a glass flask, filter, squeezing piston. In America it is more often used for coffee, and in Russia a French press is used for tea. The French has the same diameter for all glass flasks. It just varies in volume. Accordingly, the higher it is, the more liquid will enter. A glass flask allows you to observe the process - this makes brewing coffee in a French press or drinking tea an interesting procedure.
The flask is placed in a housing. It can be made of plastic or metal. There is also a cover into which the piston is inserted. It gently moves up and down and serves as a wringing device. At its base there is a mesh filter, a steel part, and a spring. All this is fastened together with a bolt.
Before you make your favorite drink in a French jacket, you should pour the tea leaves and pour boiling water over it. After a few minutes, you will need to squeeze out the sediment with a piston. He lowers the tea leaves down, and the aromatic liquid rises up.
The French press for tea has a number of advantages, these are:
- convenience of design;
- ease of use;
- compactness.
Brewing coffee or tea in a French press takes a little time. You can adjust the strength of the drink. The tea and coffee press fully reveals the aroma of any drink. Its taste will be pure, without foreign tastes or odors. For example, coffee prepared in this way is not thick, has no bitterness or sourness.
History of the teapot
The technology can hardly be called new: the first French presses appeared back in the 1800s (and yes, in France), although they were far from modern models. At the beginning of the 20th century, the design was noticeably improved in Italy, and by the mid-50s, the French press acquired its modern look, and this was done, again, by the French.
In the post-Soviet space, French presses gained mass popularity already in the 2000s, when they began to be found in literally every tea and coffee store, as well as in kitchenware departments. But at first they were used exclusively for making tea, and coffee was prepared in other ways. And, perhaps, only in the last decade have French presses been used for coffee
How to brew coffee correctly
To prepare the drink, use bean coffee (pre-ground). It is better to take bottled water or filtered water. If you want to get a strong, fragrant drink, grind the grains immediately before drinking. For 100 ml of water you need to take 2 teaspoons of coffee.
- Boil water and leave to cool for a minute. Do not pour boiling water into the container; the glass may burst.
- Rinse the container with hot water.
- Pour the required amount of coffee into the flask and pour in a few teaspoons of water at room temperature. The liquid should only moisten the coffee. Stir. The coffee substance will foam and swell slightly.
- After a minute, add hot water to the container; its temperature should not exceed 90 °C.
- Stir the drink and close the teapot with a lid. The piston must remain in the raised position. Make sure that the filter does not come into contact with the water, but is 1 cm above the liquid level.
- Let the coffee steep for 5 minutes.
- Slowly, slowly, lower the piston, separating the sediment. Immediately after this, pour the drink into a heated cup; leaving coffee in the brewer is not recommended.
- Without delay, wash the flask.
If you want to prepare a larger portion of the drink, add coffee powder to the flask at the rate of 1 teaspoon per 50 ml of water. For a 350 ml container you will need 6-7 teaspoons of ground coffee. Pour liquid without reaching the top edge of the container. Leave 2-3 cm of reserve, otherwise you may be doused with boiling water when lowering the piston.
Warsaw style coffee recipe
You can brew a drink in a French press according to different recipes. Try making coffee the Warsaw style.
- Coffee 50 g;
- Water 50 ml;
- Sugar;
- Baked milk 450 ml;
- Cinnamon.
In order to get a quality drink, the device needs to be warmed up:
Boil water and let it cool slightly. Pour hot water into the teapot container. Warm the milk, grind the coffee. Remove the water from the container and add coffee, sugar and a pinch of crushed cinnamon. Add a little hot water, stir and pour in warm milk
Carefully lower the piston. Pour the infused drink into a warm cup
Classic coffee
The aromatic drink resembles espresso and is prepared from 4 tablespoons of ground coffee and 500 ml of water.
Cooking method:
- Pour hot water over the flask of the device.
- Place coffee powder in a container and pour in 0.5 liters of boiling water. Stir the contents of the container and lower the filter so that the lid is slightly covered with water. Let the drink brew.
- After 5 minutes, slowly lower the plunger. Pour the drink into cups.
Latte
To make a latte you will need 2 tsp. freshly ground coffee, 300 ml warm milk, cinnamon and sugar.
Cooking method:
- Pour ground coffee into a French press flask and fill the contents with 100 ml of hot water at a temperature of 95 °C.
- After 5 minutes, lower the piston to separate the sediment from the liquid. Pour coffee into cups.
- Rinse the teapot container and fill it with warm milk, heated to 60-65 °C. Lower and raise the plunger several times while whipping up the foam.
- Taking care not to damage the foam, add the milk from the flask to the cups of coffee. Place foam on top and sprinkle the drink with a pinch of cinnamon or grated chocolate.
You can serve the latte in another way. Pour the brewed coffee into a container with a spout
Fill a tall glass with frothed milk, and then carefully pour coffee around the rim of the glass. Garnish the drink with crushed cinnamon
Coffee with milk is ready.
Green citrus tea
Ingredients (for 1-2 servings): 70 ml orange juice, 70 ml hot green tea, 2 grapefruit slices, 1 tsp. maple syrup (or any other to taste), 1 tbsp. l. lemongrass syrup (or any other citrus syrup), 1 sprig of fresh mint, 3 cardamom seeds, 150 ml boiling water.
Instructions . Pour hot but not boiling water over fruit tea and hibiscus and leave for 4 minutes. Pour into a glass, add anise and cinnamon. If desired and to taste, add 1 tbsp. l. chopped fruit. Stir.
Recipe from Oleg Kashin, bar manager of the Il Forno
The French press is primarily used for brewing green tea. At the same time, it outperforms a regular teapot in many ways. Firstly, brewing tea using a French press requires significantly less tea leaves than brewing in a regular teapot. In addition, you do not need any additional filtering devices. The filter built into the piston will reliably protect your tea from tea dust and small tea leaves that will certainly try to ruin your tea drinking.
The beauty of this device is that with its help you can literally squeeze out all the taste and aroma from the tea leaves to the last drop. And at the same time, filter the drink and get rid of the slightest particles of tea in your cup.
What is a French press for tea? In fact, you have seen this device more than once, but you didn’t even know what it was called. This is a special teapot, inside of which a large diameter piston with a filter moves. Initially, the French tea press was designed to make it convenient to brew coffee, not tea. But over time it began to be used for both drinks.
French press: what is the difference for tea and coffee
There is no fundamental difference between a press for producing tea or another drink. The devices differ in volume - for coffee, as a rule, a small flask is used, and for tea from 750 ml. The material of the housing and filter may be different.
The glass of the container must be tempered. Such a flask can withstand high temperatures and has low thermal conductivity. Transparent walls allow you to observe the cooking process, turning it into an interesting event.
The case can be plastic or metal - it protects the container from damage and prevents burns. Design features come down to the shape of the flask - round is considered optimal, as it ensures uniform heat distribution. But the most common containers are in the shape of a cylinder.
Filters can be:
- Synthetic. Such meshes are capable of retaining small particles, so they are suitable for fine-leaf or medium grinding of raw materials. Nylon is usually used for their manufacture.
- Metal. Suitable for making loose leaf tea. Small particles may penetrate into the squeezed liquid. They are durable.
For ease of maintenance, it is better to choose collapsible models. The most preferred French press manufacturers include Rondell, Bodum and TalleR. The most inexpensive, but distinguished by quality products, can be called devices from Attribute.
How to brew coffee in a French press: step-by-step instructions
Most people simply pour some coffee, pour boiling water over it, lower the filter down a little and wait. But in order to better reveal the taste and aromatic qualities, it is worth doing differently:
- Let the water boil.
- Grind the grains, as much as you need for one time
- Rinse the brewer with hot water (strictly speaking, there is no research confirming that this dramatically affects the taste of coffee, but most manufacturers and baristas recommend doing so).
- Pour coffee based on the proportion of 1.5 tablespoons per 200 ml.
- Slowly pour in about a third of the slightly cooled water (or half, if there is not enough water), pouring it over the surface so as to wet the entire layer.
- Stir and let stand for a minute.
- Add the remaining water, close the lid, but lift the filter so that it does not touch the surface - let it brew on it, the lid is only needed to retain heat.
- Let stand for 3-3.5 minutes.
- Slowly lower the filter, leaving a couple of centimeters to the bottom (if you do this abruptly, the drink may splash out).
- Pour into cups, leaving a little of the drink, do not squeeze out every last drop.
If you do not use the entire amount at once, pour it into a separate jug. The grounds continue to be extracted, and the finished coffee will turn out to be overly strong, bitter, and with a lot of caffeine.
What factors cause coffee machine breakdowns?
The main factors that affect the service life of coffee machines are mechanical wear of parts (especially various seals) and lack of proper maintenance.
If the coffee maker does not turn on, the reasons may be common breakdowns:
- The power cable is broken. It needs to be replaced.
- There was a sudden voltage surge in the network, and the fuse tripped, turning off the device. To make it work you need to replace the fuse. And to prevent such situations, it is better to install a voltage stabilizer.
- If the coffee maker was used for a long time, it could simply overheat. As a result, the thermal protection system was activated. After it has completely cooled down, you can start it again.
- The coffee machine has not been cleaned of scale, residues of coffee deposits and oils for a long time. As a result, the contacts opened. To return the machine to operation, it is necessary to restore the integrity of the contacts and carry out a complete cleaning.
- The control module is broken. This is the most difficult malfunction of automatic coffee makers, the solution of which requires the intervention of a professional.
What is a French press?
If you just heard about this method of brewing coffee, then you might think that the French press was invented quite recently. Its origins are not very clear, but this method has existed in different variations for more than a hundred years.
The modern design was patented in 1929 by Attilio Calimani. By the way, he was Italian, not French. This design is quite simple: the device consists of a glass bulb and a piston.
French press flask
Typically, a French press glass is made of glass. We can also find flasks made of ceramic, stainless steel or plastic.
- Borosilicate glass. This material contains silicates and boron trioxide, making it particularly resistant to sudden temperature changes. This means that if you fill a vessel made of borosilicate glass with hot water, the glass will not crack. This is the same material used to make most glassware for baking. Unfortunately, if you drop a French press on a tile floor, the composition of the glass is unlikely to save it.
- Ceramics. These French press flasks are less common. They are usually quite expensive, but beautiful. Often such flasks can be painted with enamel paints of different colors. Ceramic flasks for French press are coated on the inside with a special substance, which is why there will be no streaks left on the surface. For the same reason, such flasks do not absorb odors. Most ceramic flasks are dishwasher safe. They are quite strong and resistant to extreme temperatures. True, they can still be broken.
- Stainless steel. If you want a French press that won't break easily, then choose a model with a steel bowl. They usually have a sealed double shell. They're like durable thermoses, so your coffee will stay hot for hours. Stainless steel French presses can be ground or polished. Among the polished flasks you can find different colors. Polished glasses are processed to a mirror shine, so they look like they are made of silver. Service life depends on the model. Still, you don’t have to worry about the glass breaking on the floor.
- Plastic. If you buy a French press from a reputable manufacturer, the plastic cup will be made of styrene acrylonitrile (SAN). It must be free of bisphenol-A (BPA). Styrene acrylonitrile is a particularly durable type of plastic. It can withstand high temperatures; at the same time, it will not be deformed, and chemicals will not leak from it. Bisphenol-A can have negative health effects. This compound can leach into food and drinks if plastic containers that contain it are exposed to heat (for example, when water is boiled). Since French press coffee requires hot water to brew coffee, be sure to look for a BPA-free styrene acrylonitrile flask.
French press plunger
The simple mechanism inside the French press plays a key role in making coffee.
- Piston. To make the best coffee of your life, you need to use a plunger. This must be done carefully. A handle is attached to the piston rod, which is located above the cover. The rod runs through the entire French press. It is connected to a disc and filter at the bottom. The piston will be used not only for brewing coffee, but also for cleaning.
- Filter mesh. The lower end of the piston consists of a filter and a disk. They are pressed tightly against the glass of the flask thanks to a spring that runs along the edges of the installation. Some models contain up to 4 stainless steel mesh filters. They are needed to ensure that coffee particles remain at the bottom of the French press when using the piston. If the coffee grind is too fine or if the filter doesn't do its job well enough, particles will end up in your drink. Metal filters have also been blamed for leaving behind oils in coffee that increase cholesterol levels in the body. If you are concerned about this fact, then you can purchase paper filters or filter bags. They will trap oils that are associated with cholesterol.
The history of the French press
In 1852, French inventors Mayer and Delforge presented an interesting novelty to the public: a cylindrical vessel with a press intended for brewing coffee. But the device was not successful: due to the imperfection of the press, too much coffee grounds slipped into the cup.
It wasn't until 1928 that Italian designers Atilio Calimani and Giulio Moneta patented an improved French press. In the new model, not just a metal plate was attached to the piston, but a filter mesh, which made it possible to carefully separate the liquid from the grounds. In subsequent decades, the design of the device was improved by attaching a safe handle and a stable base that protected the table cover from heat.
French press assembled
Real popularity came to the manual coffee maker in 1958, when its design was finalized by Faliero Bondanini, and two European companies began production: the French Martin SA (Chambord brand) and the English Household Articles (La Cafetiere brand). Initially, the owner of Household Articles, L. J. de Ville-Castel, was one of the investors in Martin SA, but in the 90s of the 20th century the French company was bought out by the Danish holding Bodum.
Customer Reviews
Alexandra, Voronezh: “For a work office, a French press is an excellent option. Makes coffee quickly and tasty. I recommend!"
Yana, Arkhangelsk: “Our family likes to drink tea and coffee. We prefer loose, large-leaf tea, and freshly ground and freshly brewed coffee. I saw French press in the store a long time ago, but I didn’t have anything like it at home. And then my husband bought it. The quality of the brewer is good, so I never regretted the purchase.”
Irina, St. Petersburg: “I have two French presses at home: one for tea, the second for coffee. It is better not to brew these two drinks in the same container. Then the smells and tastes won’t mix!”
How to use a French press for coffee: instructions
A French press works by steeping the crushed grains with hot water and then sort of squeezing out the grounds. Once the coffee is brewed, a metal mesh strainer is pressed against the bottom of the flask, separating the coffee grounds from the liquid coffee.
The metal mesh filter allows natural oils and fine particles to pass through, making the body of the drink dense.
We'll tell you how to calculate the amount of ground coffee for your French press.
Let's say you are going to make about 320-350 ml of coffee: for example, for two small cups, or to fill one large one.
Coffee, tablespoons | Water, ml | |
Soft, rather weak | 3 | 300 |
Medium in strength | 4 | 300 |
Intense, invigorating | 5 | 300 |
One level tablespoon contains 2 heaped teaspoons or 3 level teaspoons. Pour in the coffee and smooth it out so you can guide how much you need next time without using spoons.
It is worth preparing stronger coffee if you are going to dilute it with milk or add spices: this way the coffee taste will not be lost. A weaker one is for those who like to enjoy the notes of taste of a pure black drink or try elite mono-varieties. It’s worth letting all the shades open up, and not overdoing it with bitterness and astringency.
Prepare your coffee
It is advisable to choose a medium grind. If you grind grains yourself, after the first time you will understand whether the granule size is chosen correctly:
- If the piston goes down too easily and the drink turns out watery, the grind is most likely too coarse;
- If the piston barely moves and there is too much grounds in the cup, it is better to grind the grains coarser next time.
Prepare the water
Boil the water to about 90 degrees, but if you don't have a thermometer, keep it at a full boil and let it sit for 30-40 seconds to cool slightly. Do not brew coffee in a French press with boiling and gurgling water. It is better if the water is filtered, since excessively hard or soft water can ruin the taste of the drink. 98-99% of the drink is water, and the taste of the entire drink depends on its quality.
Brew
Pour in the coffee and fill it with about half of the water, moving the kettle so as to intensively wet the entire volume of ground beans. Do not cover or stir for at least a minute.
Then stir the coffee and water with a spoon, quite vigorously, to stir the thick top layer of grounds and distribute them throughout the liquid.
Add the remaining water, slowly pouring it in a circle.
Is it worth warming up the French press with hot water before filling, as is done with a teapot? There is no evidence that this somehow improves the taste. Perhaps it can wash off the dust if the press has not been used for a long time.
Close the lid
Cover the French press with a lid, but lift the plunger with the mesh until it barely touches the surface of the drink. Wait about 3 minutes for all the aroma and flavor components to transfer into the hot water.
The larger the kettle, the longer it may take to brew. So, in a liter bottle you should keep the drink for about 6 minutes, and in a small bottle, 2-2.5 minutes after the second pouring of water may be enough.
- Some coffees develop better over a longer period of time. It's worth experimenting a couple of times to see what you like.
- As an option, you can brew light roasted varieties for 4.5-5 minutes, dark roasted varieties for about 3.5, since extraction in the second case will occur faster.
Filter
Now gently lower the piston, pressing the grounds to the bottom. He should go with some pressure, but not too fast and not too hard. Press gently, as pressing hard can stir the grounds and make the drink more bitter. If you cannot lower the piston and feel obvious resistance, raise it a couple of centimeters and try again.
You should have about 2 centimeters left to the bottom. Do not push the piston too far. If the press is large and there is a lot of grounds, focus on about 10% of the volume - they should remain inside, they should not be poured into cups.
Pour into cups
Pour coffee into cups, or, if you have prepared a lot, or want to cool it, pour it into another container. You cannot store the finished drink in a French press, as the brewing process will continue, and too many substances will pass into the drink, it will be bitter, sour, and with a lot of caffeine. Brew the amount you intend to drink.
Experts do not recommend drinking the last couple of sips from the bottom of the mug, since some fine grounds invariably end up there, and they are not good for the body and can cause heartburn.
Procedure for brewing tea
Experts in tea ceremonies have formulated a number of recommendations on how to properly brew tea in a French press. You can prepare a hot or cold drink. The main thing is to adhere to the basic rules. You will first need to prepare the device: it must be clean, free of foreign odors. It is best to pour boiling water over it to get rid of dust particles or microorganisms on its inner surface. In addition, this way its walls will warm up and will not cool the tea while brewing. It is better to fill in purified water with a low hardness index. Tap water will distort the taste of the drink and leave traces of plaque on the walls and plunger of the French press.
Hot tea
After preparing the dishes, you can proceed to the actual cooking. You need to boil water in a kettle and prepare the tea leaves. The hot drink is infused according to a fairly simple algorithm:
- pour tea leaves into the flask - 1-2 teaspoons per 1 cup;
- wait until the water boils, let it stand for about 20-30 seconds, then pour in the leaves;
- cover the flask with the plunger, but do not lower the strainer for 2-3 minutes;
- lower the plunger;
- pour the drink into cups.
Do not pour boiling water over the tea raw materials, it destroys essential oils, depriving the tea of aroma and giving it excessive bitterness. It is better to use water heated (or cooled) to 85-90 degrees. It is not recommended to steep tea for longer than 15 minutes. It will turn out bitter. If there is liquid left in the French press after spilling, it is better to add more hot water and brew the tea again.
If you wish, you can slightly diversify the brewing process by using different recipes. French press tea will be richer if you add dried fruits, berries, citrus fruits, herbs or spices to the leaves. But it is better to add sweeteners after pouring the drink into cups, on an individual basis.
Cold tea
The first part of preparing a cold drink is brewing hot tea, which will need to be cooled to 25-30 degrees. Cold does not mean icy, just slightly cooled. And you can complement its taste with various additives. For example, prepare lemon slices: cut into slices, sprinkle with sugar (sand, powder) and add boiled water. Then freeze. You can make ice cubes from lemon juice. They are added to a chilled drink separately or together with honey, berry syrup or fruit. You can add berry, citrus or fruit juice to the settled tea (about 50 ml per cup). You can also use mint, lemon balm, cinnamon, dried berries or fruits as a flavoring addition.
It is important to remember that you should not leave the drink to cool for too long. It will become tart and bitter in taste. And it will lose all its aroma. The optimal temperature is considered to be 25-30 degrees. During the hot season, you can drink iced tea, but it should be cooled after it has been properly prepared and filtered from the tea leaves.
How to properly use a French press to brew coffee
Before you start making coffee, wash the dishes well, then pour boiling water over them to warm them up, and wipe dry with a clean towel or napkin.
When all the preparatory procedures have been completed, you can start brewing the aromatic drink: pour the desired amount of ground coffee beans into a bowl and add hot water
It is important not to fill the flask to the very top, but to leave a couple of centimeters to the edge of the container. Next, you need to mix everything thoroughly. For this, it is best to use a wooden spoon - it will not heat up from high temperatures, which means you do not risk getting burned
In addition, it is almost impossible to break a glass flask with it, even if the mixture is actively stirred. In any case, you should act carefully. Then you need to install the filter on the lid in the upper position and close the vessel with it. Now the coffee should brew. It should be remembered that the longer the drink is brewed, the stronger it will be in the end. But you should not move on to the next stage of cooking until at least 4 minutes have passed. So, when the allotted time has passed, you can begin to separate the coffee grounds from the drink itself: grab the filter handle and gently press on it. Continue lowering the plunger all the way until all grain particles are pressed to the bottom of the flask. If at the same time the piston moves heavily and tightly, you have to apply considerable effort, then the grinding of the grains is too fine. If the plunger goes down easily enough, the coffee is ground too coarsely.
Coffee brewed using a French press is noticeably different from the same drink prepared in another way, for example, in a coffee maker or Turk. In the first case, its taste, as a rule, acquires a pronounced characteristic sourness.
The foam that forms on the surface will indicate that the coffee is prepared correctly, its aroma will be rich, and the taste will be lively and rich. If after 4 minutes of infusion of the drink the foam still does not appear, it means that either the grains used were of poor quality, or the water was taken at the wrong temperature.
It is better not to leave the finished coffee in the French press for a long time. It is advisable to pour it into cups immediately after cooking, or move it to another container. Otherwise, the drink will continue to brew, and this may lead to its taste being irreparably spoiled by excess bitterness.
Immediately after use, the utensils must be disassembled and all parts of the French press thoroughly washed.
Particular attention should be paid to cleaning the filter because small grain particles often remain in the filter. In order for the device to last as long as possible, it is recommended to occasionally disassemble the filter itself into parts and carefully process them, cleaning each of them separately
How to disassemble a coffee maker
In order to repair any coffee makers (Nespresso - Nespresso, Delonghi), you will need to first disassemble them. Step-by-step instructions on how to do this:
- There are set screws on the back of the coffee machine. They need to be untwisted and put aside. They can be of several types: hidden, cross and cone-shaped (often found in Indesit). They are removed with a screwdriver, pliers or other suitable tools;
- If the case is not removed after removing the screws, then it is secured with hidden locks. The latches are located at the bottom of the rear panel. They cannot be opened from the outside, so you will have to pry them off with a knife or screwdriver;
- After removing the housing, you can begin repair work.
If the tube of DeLongy, Bork, Ariete or other coffee makers is clogged, then you need to use a long thin rubber hose to repair it. It runs along the duct and breaks through the blockage. Sometimes special brushes with a flexible stem are used for such purposes; they allow you to clean the tube and remove not only coffee, but also mineral deposits.
Photo - design
Cleaning the filter is a little more difficult. With frequent use, various debris accumulates on it: salt plugs, coffee dust, scale. It should be cleaned only according to the instructions, because otherwise, the integrity of the spare part may be compromised. In most cases, it can be wiped with a swab soaked in alcohol or another degreaser. After washing, rinse the part thoroughly.
Design features of French presses
In terms of their design, all teapots are of the same type, and consist of five main elements:
- The flask is where the brewing takes place. The most commonly used glass flask is made of heat-resistant borosilicate glass. This is exactly what is used, only thinner, for glass baking dishes. Even a sharp change in temperature or strong sudden heating does not lead to the appearance of cracks. But the flask is not shockproof - if you drop it, or hit the coffee pot too hard, the flask will break. There are also metal flasks, which are much stronger and last, in general, forever, but you need to specifically look for this; there are few offers in stores. There is also ceramics - it is believed that the drink tastes better in it, but again, it is very rare.
- The filter is usually three-layer. At the bottom is a frame, then a metal or nylon fine mesh, and then a metal plate with holes, and usually a twisted catcher along the edge.
- Plunger, also known as a piston, connecting the lid and the filter.
- Lid . Just a lid, flat or convex, made of different materials. Most often it is stainless steel, but there is also plastic and glass.
- Body and handle. Usually there is either a bottom or legs that protect the surface from touching the hot flask, and the decor both holds the flask and somewhat protects it from impacts.
Mechanism of operation
A capsule coffee maker differs from a “standard” one in that it uses not ordinary beans, but compressed ground ones. The main “components” are: housing, thermoblock, boiler, pump, control unit, capsule brewing and ejection system and water dispenser. Any capsule contains a certain dose of coffee, which further simplifies the preparation of the drink and eliminates the danger of overdoing it with strength. During the process of making the drink, a hole is pierced in the capsule and, under the influence of water, its contents are converted into coffee. The procedure is no different from other capsule coffee makers.
Advantages and disadvantages
When people talk about what a French press is, they usually explain how to use it, but few people reveal all the benefits of this teapot.
So, here are the reasons to start using a French press.
Advantages
- Delicious and aromatic coffee;
- The grounds are filtered out efficiently, but it is precisely this that often causes irritation of the stomach and intestines. And it’s simply more pleasant to drink coffee when the particles don’t stay on your teeth.
- You can brew your favorite coffee wherever there is boiling water. You don’t need a stove or a Turk (see recipe for oriental coffee). And even the water will not be too hot, the drink will be brewed, but there will be no grain particles in it (and this often happens when you brew coffee in a mug).
- Your coffee is guaranteed not to burn or run away. Very convenient for those who are distracted from the Turk for a second and then have to wash the stove.
- Even a child can handle preparing the drink. It’s difficult for him to keep track of the Turk, and the stove needs to be turned on, but for a French press you just need to press the button on the electric kettle, boil water, pour it into the flask and cover with a lid.
- Unlike coffee machines, due to the long brewing time, the French press allows the maximum amount of oils, flavors and aromatic compounds to pass into the water (see the chemical composition of coffee). You will be surprised how rich and deep the taste of your favorite drink will be.
- You can adjust the strength of the coffee (depending on the infusion time);
- Low price;
- Easy to care for;
- The ability to add spices immediately while preparing the drink;
- Does not consume electricity;
- Compactness;
- Multifunctional (suitable for making tea, tea drinks, etc.).
Flaws
- Manual method of preparing the drink;
- You must additionally have a kettle or other device for heating water;
- You cannot store the drink in it for a long time to avoid oxidation and damage to the parts of the French press.
What to cook in a teapot
The main thing that a teapot can provide is a drink without particles that always remain on the teeth and mouth. The device is simple and perfectly dishwasher safe.
If you decide to drink delicious and aromatic tea, then following the recommendations you can drink a delicious drink.
Today, the French press is used in many cultural institutions, offices and homes. You can use the device to brew coffee or tea, it all depends on your preferences and taste.
Solution: How to Brew Tea Grade 2 Write a Text - main characteristics
The process of making strong tea is very similar to making coffee. And yet, how to brew tea in a French press correctly?
An extremely convenient and practical device under the interesting and intriguing name French press first appeared in offices. Later the press became more widespread. Today there is a press in almost every home, and traditionally we use it to brew tea.
How to choose in a store
When purchasing a French press, pay attention to the flask. It must be made of heat-resistant glass
The simplest models may use plastic, which may not have a very positive effect on the taste of the drink brewed in such a flask. Expensive ones can also use metal. But we recommend glass, as it is easy to clean and does not absorb odors and coffee oils. You can also clearly see through the glass how the drink is brewing. There are models with a spare flask, you can pay attention to them when purchasing. If you break one, you will always have another in stock.
The case of cheap models is made of plastic, while more expensive ones use metal, usually stainless steel.
Many people advise paying attention to the handle of the press and recommend taking devices with a plastic handle so that you don’t burn your hands when brewing. From our experience we can say that if the French press is made with high quality, the metal handle will not heat up and will not cause you any trouble.
However, decide for yourself how it will be more convenient and enjoyable for you.
The metal mesh of the plunger should fit snugly against the inner walls of the flask. To check this, lift the piston with the strainer up to the lid and release. If the piston stays in place and does not go down, then the plunger is sitting quite tightly inside the French press.
What is a French press?
So, a tea press is a necessary attribute of a person who has little time, but wants to brew normal, high-quality tea. Many of my friends have given up tea bags because they are generally of very low quality. What should such people do? Should they take to work all the tea ceremony utensils they have at home? No! a French press with you.

We prepare everything you need to make delicious French press coffee at home
To prepare cappuccino or espresso in a French press, you only need the device itself, coffee, water and something that can change the taste of the drink. This could be milk, sugar, syrups, spices, cocoa. As with the Turkish press, you can experiment with the French press.
Ingredients for making French press coffee
One of the key ingredients is the coffee itself. But not everyone will suit you. Firstly, the beans should be medium roasted. The grind should be coarse: the size of small buckwheat or coarse rock salt. The grains must be ground evenly.
Another important point is the French press itself. There are many options for this device on the market, but if you plan to brew coffee in it, then choose a glass flask. The fact is that glass never reacts with water or grounds.
Recipe 1 Cappuccino
Yes, a French press is quite suitable for preparing it. We need:
- 600 ml water;
- Coffee – 2 tbsp;
- Milk – 125 ml;
- Sugar – 2 tsp.
To prepare, heat the water to 85 degrees. We prepare coffee like any other using a French press. Pour into cups. Heat the milk to 70 degrees, but no more. For this, for example, you can use a microwave. Once warmed up, pour it into a French press and move the piston up and down very intensively. After half a minute you can put it in a cup of liquid. Be sure to sprinkle cinnamon on top.
Recipe No. 2. Latte macchiato in French press
- Heat the French press with hot water. Next, pour 4 tsp into it. ground coffee;
- Pour in 150 ml of boiled water (temperature about 90 degrees). Don't forget to stir;
- Cover the French press so that the piston reaches the liquid a little and comes into contact with it;
- We wait 5 minutes, but no more, otherwise the maquito will lose its properties;
- While everything is brewing, take pasteurized milk (150 g) and place it in the microwave for a couple of minutes;
- Now we lower the piston down extremely slowly, pour the drink into a preheated container, from which we will then pour it in a thin stream into the milk;
- We rinse the French press. Pour milk into it. Beat with a piston, progressively moving it up and down. Move the piston for a third of a minute;
- When the milk froths, pour it into a latte glass and wait for the line between milk and foam to appear. This usually takes about a third of a minute;
- Slowly pour coffee into the center of the milk;
- Sprinkle everything with spices, cocoa powder or grated chocolate.
Use in everyday life
The ritual of the tea ceremony, which was carefully taught to the inhabitants of the East, came to European countries several centuries ago. It has ceased to be such a complex element of etiquette, but continues to be one of the most popular drinks, without which not a single meal is complete.
Some models of French presses have an additional stand on which it is convenient to place a small candle to maintain a constant temperature of the drink. Lovers of scalding hot tea will not remain indifferent to this invention.
The drink is allowed to brew for about 3 minutes. If you want to get stronger tea, then leave it for 5 minutes. After the leaves float up, you need to gradually immerse the piston to the very bottom of the flask. This is necessary to prevent tea leaves from falling into the cup. When the drink is ready, you can pour it and enjoy the unique taste.
There is no single recipe for such tea, because the ingredients on hand are always different, moreover, there is not always access to fresh fruits and berries. However, there are general guidelines regarding any composition, whether dried fruit or taken straight from the garden:
For this punch you will need to brew 120 ml of strong tea in a French press, mix it hot with 30 g of raspberry syrup and add 4 tbsp. spoons of lemon juice. Pour the prepared punch into preheated glasses.
