Cream is a classic addition to coffee drinks. Their texture is thicker and more velvety than milk, and there is a large selection of products of varying fat content and density for making liquid drinks and almost creamy desserts. We tell you all about how to make coffee with cream according to a variety of recipes, how many calories are in the drink, what its benefits and potential harm are, and much more. Just one product – and so many different flavors!
What is coffee with cream called?
Coffee with cream does not have one name that everyone understands. More precisely, there are some regional ones, for specific recipes that are found in different countries:
- Palazzo is a Californian recipe. Two servings of chilled espresso are poured with a sweetened creamy milk mixture.
- Espresso con Panna - an analogue of cappuccino, an Italian recipe - espresso with whipped creamy foam, sprinkled with cinnamon.
- Irish - coffee with alcohol and a creamy head (Irish whiskey is usually used, although brandy or cognac is acceptable).
Viennese coffee is the most popular name in the post-Soviet space, although in Vienna itself it is more often prepared with foamed milk.
Kinds
The benefits and harms of a given drink are determined by its type. Many people know that a mug of strong, fresh tonic drink can give you energy for the whole day. But there are also those who do not drink an invigorating cocktail at all. Some people prefer to neutralize the bitterness of freshly brewed black coffee with milk. It is for this reason that the question often arises whether there is any benefit from such a combination. There are several ways to prepare this drink.
The most popular varieties of the vigor drink with milk include:
- Latte: Consists of three parts steamed milk and one part freshly brewed coffee.
- Latte macchiato: a three-layer drink, the main feature of which is the careful addition of coffee powder.
- Cappuccino: ingredients are mixed in equal proportions.
Coffee with cream: benefits and harms
To claim that every cup of coffee-creamy drink brings you clear benefits is clearly wrong. This is, in fact, milk fat, and although it also contains vitamins and microelements from milk, they are still not enough for any obvious effect. They are added, first of all, for taste, to soften coffee bitterness and sourness, to make the taste a little sweeter without adding sugar.
People with high stomach acidity will get a clear positive effect from drinking creamy coffee drinks. If it is impossible to give up your morning coffee, drink it with a creamier additive, richer, this will protect the digestive system from high caffeine acidity.
Is it possible to drink coffee with cream if you have hypertension?
In general, consuming caffeine in this state is undesirable, but if you often have high blood pressure and do not refuse the stimulant, it is better to dilute it. If your blood pressure rises suddenly, then you should be patient and drink a cup when you feel good.
Can pregnant women have coffee with cream?
If there are no obvious contraindications, then sometimes you can drink a weak, creamy coffee cocktail, and this is definitely better than pure bitter black. Alternatively, you can also add milk. And it will invigorate you a little (many pregnant women suffer from low blood pressure), and the effect on the body will be milder, caffeine will not be absorbed so sharply.
Is it possible for people on a diet to have coffee with cream?
This is a fairly high-calorie product, but it adds sweetness. If you don't like drinking straight Americano because of the bitter-sour aftertaste, it's best to add a little light cream but omit the sugar. Sometimes you can treat yourself to such a cocktail; one serving in the morning will definitely not affect your calorie balance too much, but don’t get carried away.
Choose natural products, and then the cocktail will be quite healthy. Instant coffee and store-bought creamer do not contain anything useful.
Is it possible to drink coffee with milk - the benefits of the drink
Coffee has a beneficial effect on the body due to the tonic substances in its composition, organic acids, microelements, and antioxidants. The drink stimulates the nervous system, improves mood, and relieves drowsiness. Drinking coffee with milk or cream makes no difference; adding these products will not increase the benefits of the drink. Subscribe to our page on Instagram!
Antioxidants that have beneficial effects on health. In Switzerland, at the NESTLE research center, an experiment was conducted in which people were given different types of coffee to drink. During the experiment, the influence of milk in coffee on the content of polyphenols in it was revealed. It turned out that the addition of the product did not in any way affect the absorption of these antioxidants. How to get rid of caffeine addiction
Coffee cream recipes
There are a lot of recipes, as there are different types of creamy products. You can modify the combinations, add spices, liqueurs, etc., creating very interesting flavor profiles. Here's how to make coffee with cream in different variations:
Black coffee with cream
The simplest recipe: brew coffee the way you like, in any way. And add to it about a tablespoon of drinking cream of any fat content, 10%, 15%, 20%, whatever you have. You can also take fattier ones - they will lie on the surface, you can sprinkle them with cinnamon, nutmeg, and chocolate chips.
Creamy iced coffee
There are two cooking options at once:
- Prepare a large amount of filter coffee or Americano and chill it in the refrigerator for several hours. If you want something sweet, sweeten it in advance or dissolve the sugar well in cold liquid. Add light cream.
- Fill the glass with ice. Pour in a couple of shots of espresso or one Americano (pre-sweetened if necessary), and add the creamy part. This option is good because it cooks very quickly, no need to wait for cooling.
Syrups, liqueurs and strong alcohol like rum or brandy are great for such cocktails.
Instant coffee with cream
If you like instant product, no problem. Creamy fillings are also added to it, and the taste becomes more interesting. It’s just better to add more powder or granules than you are used to, because the dense creamy texture will “clog” the coffee taste.
Coffee with cream in a coffee machine
Everything is simple with cooking: the automation will do everything for you:
- If you have a separate milk container or milk carton tube, you can use low-fat creamer and the machine will froth that too.
- If you use capsules, choose ready-made coffee-cream capsules, there are not many of them (usually they are coffee-milk), but you can find unusual combinations, for example, coffee “strawberries with cream” or with the addition of ginseng.
- If you have a steamer, try whipping up a thick, creamy foam and pouring it on top of the espresso to create a creamy cappuccino. Keep in mind that when beating, the volume will approximately double, so calculate the proportions.
Coffee with cream in Turkish
At home, this is usually almost the simplest and most delicious option:
- Grind the coffee beans or take already ground ones at the rate of a heaping teaspoon per cup.
- Pour in water and bring to a boil three times until foam rises.
- Remove from heat and pour in a spoonful of cold water to settle the grounds.
- Pour into a cup and add the creamy mixture.
We do not recommend adding dairy ingredients during the cooking process - this will not greatly affect the taste, and it will be more difficult to wash the Turk.
Viennese cappuccino
For this recipe, it is better to whip the creamy mass yourself, adding various spices and ingredients to it; from a can it will be completely different.
- Make a strong coffee, such as double espresso.
- Whip heavy cream (at least 30%) until doubled in volume. While beating, add vanilla and powdered sugar, or vanilla sugar at once. You can pour in a spoonful of strong alcohol.
- Spread the whipped mixture over the espresso.
- Garnish with grated orange zest, grated chocolate, topping, syrup, whatever you like.
This dessert must be served with a spoon, and preferably a straw, so that you can choose exactly how to enjoy the treat - eat the sweet foam with a spoon, or mix everything, or drink espresso through a straw.
Mochaccino / Mocha
A very delicate chocolate and creamy cocktail - mochaccino or mocha. Using different types of chocolate, you will get a special taste every time:
- A couple of pieces of chocolate, dark, milk or white;
- A serving of coffee is about 100 ml;
- Cream, regular or whipped, in extreme cases - from a can.
Melt the chocolate in a cup, pour in the coffee. Either stir right away or let the drink be flaky. Top with whipped cream foam and decorate with grated chocolate or nut topping.
With liqueurs
Delicate, weak liqueurs on a creamy or egg base go well with the coffee-creamy taste and make it even smoother, velvety, and viscous. Fruit ones are less successful; the following types are more suitable:
- Chocolate;
- Coffee;
- Baileys and all analogues;
- Sheridans;
- Walnut;
- Amaretto;
- Advocate;
- Kahlua.
It is acceptable to add any syrups and traditional coffee spices (nutmeg, cinnamon, cardamom, cloves, vanilla) to recipes. An interesting taste is also obtained with honey.
History of the drink
The combination of these two products goes by many different names:
- cappuccino;
- latte;
- frapé;
- konpanna;
- latte macchiato.
There are many recipes based on a coffee drink with the addition of dairy products. The main ingredient in the drink is, of course, ground coffee. One version says that the history of this drink began in Ethiopia. The shepherd noticed that his goats were eating some berries, after which the animals ran around the field without stopping and did not even sleep at night. The shepherd decided to try the berries himself and felt an incredible surge of energy. He shared his discovery with his neighbors, and they also began to eat the berries to stay active during the day. Much later they learned to make a drink from grains.
Currently, coffee trees are grown in South and Central America, Asia, and Africa. The coffee industry is best developed in Brazil, which is the world's largest supplier of coffee. Most people prefer Arabica for its smooth and amazing taste.
On a note! In global trade turnover, coffee is in second place after oil.
It is not known for certain who was the first to decide to add milk. There are many versions of where the name “cappuccino” came from. Perhaps the name originates from the monastic order of the Capuchins, who wore hoods whose color resembled a coffee-milk drink. Translated from the Italian word “capuccio” means “hood”.
According to another version, France is considered the birthplace of the drink. In this country, black coffee began to be diluted with milk, after which the drink became popular in Europe and America. In Russia, they did not drink natural coffee for a long time, preferring instant sublimate. Now in our country there are many fans of real taste and enchanting aroma.
Calorie content of coffee with cream
The energy value of the drink depends largely on what products you use, their volume and fat content. Coffee itself has virtually no calories, with a maximum of up to 5 calories per cup.
For ease of calculation, take a 150 ml serving of coffee, a tablespoon of cream – 15 ml and a heaped spoon of sugar – 7 grams:
Fat content | Kcal per 100 g | Calorie content of coffee with cream without sugar | Calories in coffee with cream and sugar |
10% | 118 | 21 | 49 |
15% | 160 | 27 | 55 |
20% | 205 | 34 | 62 |
30% | 293 | 47 | 75 |
35% | 335 | 53 | 81 |
Coffee with whipped cream from a can is a higher calorie product - on average, about 60 kcal per serving.
Coffee with cream in bags - on average 70 kcal, since sugar is added, such products are almost never found without it, this is a “3 in 1” option.
The calorie content is very low, so even with a strict diet, you can sometimes treat yourself to such a cocktail. And even if you choose a product with 20 percent fat, it won't disrupt your daily calorie intake too much either.
Coffee drinks without milk
The basic “black” drinks are ristretto, espresso and lungo - they differ in strength in terms of caffeine content, as well as in richness of taste. This is explained by the fact that when brewing, substances from coffee dissolve in water at different times: first - acids, then sugars, after sugars - bitter substances (including caffeine).
Therefore, ristretto, being the smallest portion of coffee, where on average 7 g of coffee contains 15-20 ml of water, has the greatest sweetness and the lowest strength of the three presented. Espresso has a denser texture and contains more caffeine - to prepare it you need up to 35 ml of water. The most water passes through the coffee when preparing lungo, which is why it is characterized by greater strength than espresso and ristretto.
Americano is made from espresso by adding hot water.
Ground coffee with cream
Sometimes in stores you can buy coffee with the taste of cream - for example, it is called “Irish Cream”. Many manufacturers have such products, most often these are crushed grains, although sometimes you can find whole ones, and you can also ask them to grind them on site.
You must understand that this is only a flavoring, there is not even a dry creamy concentrate-powder there. That is, you will get a black drink that smells like Irish liqueurs. Of course, there is no liquor, syrup or alcohol there either. The drink will be unsweetened, but the light taste and aroma of the creamy alcoholic cream is still present.
You can purchase this product in most large stores, as well as in specialized points of sale of tea and coffee products.
How to cook properly?
Classic recipe: pour ground coffee into a pot and add cold water. You can add cinnamon. Bring to a boil, but do not boil. Pour into a cup, add sugar and milk to taste.
You can prepare the drink in a coffee machine. In this case, you get a latte, macchiato, cappuccino.
Important! The benefits of coffee with added milk will only be if a high-quality natural ground product is used.
The most aromatic coffee comes from Turkish coffee.
