Rating of the best coffee syrups - popular manufacturers in Russia 2022

What types of coffee syrups are there?

Of course, a freshly brewed drink is wonderful in itself, but sometimes you want some kind of contrast. In such cases, various additives are used in the form of syrups. At first, the inhabitants of Europe and America began to add them, since sweetness was an essential ingredient in their coffee drink. In this article, we will analyze which syrup is most suitable for this or that type of coffee, how to use them correctly and what they are?

Which syrup is best for which coffee?

At first, syrup was used as a decorative element; it was used to decorate the surface of drinks such as lattes, for example. Later they began to be added to espresso.

Systematization of syrups by flavor categories:

  1. Berry and fruit - apple, banana, plum, raspberry, etc.
  2. Desserts – chocolate, ice cream cake,
  3. Nuts – macadamia, almond, cedar,
  4. Spicy - cinnamon, vanilla.

Of all this huge contrast, there are certainly favorites that are in great demand in the world.

Syrup is added to cocktails to reduce the “sweetness” and enhance the coffee taste. In espresso it helps bring out a pleasant nutty flavor and aroma. Hazelnut syrup goes well with American blends and 100% Arabica beans because it helps bring out their inherent fruity acidity.

Caramel

It has a pleasant creamy aftertaste, which is why it is often used to soften the strength of coffee. In addition, caramel syrup gives a pleasant taste and smell in various coffee cocktails. It mixes well with cappuccino, espresso, which are made from 100% Arabica coffee, with coffee with cream or fruit juice.

It is especially preferred by those with a sweet tooth, because it imparts a pronounced sweetness to any drink. It perfectly reduces strength, softens bitterness, and maintains the softness of coffee taste. Therefore, thanks to its special qualities, many people love to combine it with strong varieties. Due to its luxurious taste, vanilla syrup harmonizes perfectly with drinks such as coffee - milk - ice cream.

Chocolate

Chocolate is considered a good friend of coffee, as together they can create an excellent taste and smell. Chocolate syrup can better reveal all the notes of a coffee drink and also add new colors to cocktails. It is appropriate with coffee that contains strong alcohol - it can be liqueur, or, for example, cognac.

Not All Flavored Syrups Are Made Equally

There are many flavoring syrups, but not all of them are suitable for adding to coffee. That's why we decided to explain what will suit you.

Flavored syrups typically contain a simple syrup: for example, sugar or sugar substitute is mixed with water, then heated to increase solubility. After this, flavoring agents are added. The final formula of the product indicates whether it is suitable for adding to coffee, cold drinks or cooking.

If you decide to look for flavoring syrups on your own, then you need to be sure that you choose the right product.

Explanation

Syrups for adding to coffee

Agave syrup (agave nectar)

Agave syrup is known for its subtle sweetness and light caramel notes. The plant's nectar can be added to coffee-based drinks. It will complement the taste of coffee with sweetness, but will not make it unbearably cloying.

Syrups for cocktails

These syrups usually have fruit flavors. They are designed to be added to cocktails and other cold drinks.

Concentrates

Concentrates are essentially flavorings that already contain caffeine. They should not be mixed with coffee, otherwise the taste will be too strong and the person will experience nervousness.

Dessert sauces

Dessert sauces are not so clear cut. The selection of Ghirardelli sauces mentioned in our recommendations section are suitable for adding to coffee-based drinks.

How much syrup is recommended to add?

In theory, everyone chooses how much syrup to add to the drink, everything depends on personal taste preferences. But there are accepted tips from well-known baristas that you can stick to for a while until you get the hang of it.

How to properly combine syrups with coffee?

Everyone has their own personal taste preferences, but there are a number of rules that should still be followed in order to truly discover the tastes and smells of coffee.

  • dark strong is not recommended to be combined with fruit and berry syrups; it is best to add “Irish cream”, which will perfectly reveal the fullness of the taste and smell of the drink.

  2. Coconut. Right next to the favorite is coconut syrup. It is able to soften the taste of even the strongest coffee, adding tenderness, a bit of the smell of the sea breeze and a little tropical sun.
  3. Vanilla. Another popular concentrate, the basis of many recipes close to traditional ones. The successful tandem of coffee bitterness and aromatic taste, generously flavored with sweetish spice, rightfully puts vanilla syrup in third place in our rating.
  4. Caramel. A universal syrup that can be added not only to coffee, but also to tea, baked goods, alcoholic and non-alcoholic cocktails. The rich, sweetish-delicate taste of melted creamy caramel smoothes out the hard edges of all drinks - after decorating with caramel motifs, they simply begin to melt in the mouth, leaving a unique aftertaste.
  5. Almond. A rather specific syrup, bittersweet, with the taste of roasted almonds and the smell of cane sugar, which has an army of millions of loyal fans. Luxurious and aristocratic almond syrup completes the top five favorites in the rating.
  6. Nut. A good choice for those who don't like almonds. The rounded, smooth and deeply textured flavor of crushed nuts is complemented by clear fruity touches in this syrup, which means it will appeal to both adults and children.
  7. Chocolate. This syrup, in fact, shares the previous rating position with its nutty counterpart - it is more popular and needed both among coffee lovers and among supporters of tea ceremonies or alcoholic parties. The traditional enveloping taste of melted chocolate turns the concentrate into a favorite syrup of people of different genders, ages and social status.
  8. Irish. A thick and viscous syrup that amazingly softens the harshness of rich coffee, with a rich bouquet of flavors made up of dark chocolate, buttery creamy caramel and fragrant vanilla. Coffee, moderately supplemented with Irish syrup, goes perfectly with sweet desserts, especially fruit ones.
  9. Maple. The invention of American and Canadian gourmets is becoming increasingly popular every year in the vastness of our country. The sweetish taste of maple tree resin, quite tangible, but at the same time not so pronounced as to drown out the taste of coffee, will become an organic complement to espresso, macchiato or cappuccino.
  10. Mint. Have you tried coffee with mint yet? This excellent syrup with a cool menthol taste and measured relaxing aroma will provide you with such an opportunity. And mint syrup is deliciously good with tea and alcoholic drinks, lemonade and baked goods.
  11. Cherry. A real find for those who like to enrich their cup of morning coffee with the freshest fruity sweetness and special berry sourness. Thick texture, stylish red color, luxurious taste of slightly fermented “drunk” cherries make this syrup an idol for connoisseurs of aristocratic drinks.

In addition to those listed above, other varieties of Monin syrups also find their own fans among gourmets - Grenadine and Reddish Orange, Blue Curacao and Irish Cream, Strawberry and Cranberry, Chestnut, Cinnamon, Mandarin and others. Each person is unique, which means they choose syrup taking into account personal preferences and preferences. Find your own Monin too!

  • add 1 teaspoon of syrup to a shot of espresso,
  • for a large cup of cappuccino, latte, lungo and other similar drinks, 2 to 5 spoons may be useful - add the syrup evenly, tasting the coffee,
  • 4-5 teaspoons of this component can give a new flavor to a cool iced latte or iced coffee,
  • and for coffee-based cocktails with a volume of 250-300 ml, the amount of syrup can be increased to 5 teaspoons.

Follow these tips - and your every day will be brightened up with coffee flavored with delicious Monin syrup!

Review of the most delicious coffee syrups.

Coffee lovers highly value the natural bitterness of the drink. But if you want to vary the taste, you should add a little syrup to the hot drink. The fashion for introducing various sweet syrups added to coffee came from America. In this country it is not customary to drink untainted coffee drink. For the most part, Americans prefer cocktails that contain syrups.

About syrup in general

What is syrup? It is a viscous, sweet mixture consisting of sugar, water and fruit juice. Up to 800 grams of sugar are consumed per liter of water. In factory conditions, during the production of syrups, chemical additives are added that enhance the taste, smell and color of the finished product. Taking into account the viscosity of the sweet composition, it can be used as a decoration for any dessert or drink.

How to make “Syrup at home”

1. The classic recipe for homemade strawberry syrup involves using only berries and sugar. If desired, you can add a little mint for flavor, for example, or other spices.

2. First, the berries need to be thoroughly washed (if necessary, left in cold water for 10-15 minutes) and dried. Remove the stems and cut into 2-4 pieces, depending on the size of the strawberries.

3. Place the prepared strawberries in a saucepan or saucepan and add cold water.

4. Bring to a boil and reduce heat to low.

5. Simmer the berries over low heat for about 30-45 minutes until the water turns red and the strawberries begin to lose their color.

6. Then remove from heat and cool slightly. Strain through a sieve, being careful not to squeeze the juice out of the berries.

7. Pour the strained juice into a saucepan and put on fire. If you do not strain or squeeze the berries, the juice will be clear and very beautiful.

8. Add sugar and bring to a boil. Cook for about 10-30 minutes, depending on desired consistency. That's the whole simple syrup recipe at home.

9. The finished syrup can be stored in the refrigerator, using as needed, but no more than 14 days.

10. If desired, hot syrup can be poured into sterilized jars and stored for the winter.

Abundance of sweet additives

Toppings were first added to coffee in the middle of the 20th century in cafeterias in America and Europe. At first, the viscous, sweet product was complemented by latte, coffee with the addition of ice cream. Later, Monin's sweet compounds began to be added to espresso.

All sugar-based additives can be divided into four groups:

  • With a fruity and berry flavor.
  • With the taste of favorite desserts such as chocolate, tiramisu, ginger cake.
  • With a nutty flavor.
  • With vanilla or cinnamon flavor.

Among these groups there are favorites that are very popular among coffee lovers around the world.

Syrup with nut flavor

By adding Monin nut syrup, you can enhance the coffee note and reduce the sugariness of the drink. If you add a nut mixture to espresso, the nutty aftertaste will be brighter. The nutty flavored syrup blends well with Arabica beans and the consistency of South African coffee. In this case, the syrup increases the sourness of the drink.

Sketch on coffee

We bring to the attention of coffee lovers a recipe for a drink with Monin syrup with a nutty flavor:

  • A spoonful of topping with nuts.
  • Frozen ice.

Mix finely chopped ice, syrup and coffee, carefully in a shaker or mixer. We get a cooling drink that will perfectly invigorate you on a hot summer day.

Sweet syrups are needed to create a stable foam. Gelatin is not recommended because the bubbles only last about 20 minutes. Syrups are made from berries and sugar. It should not be confused with licorice root, which is also added to the drink to create foam.

Preparation:

  1. Pour blackcurrant juice into a small saucepan and place in a water bath.
  2. Add sugar. You can change the ratio from 1:0.5 to 1:1.5.
  3. Preheat to 80-90°C. Stir constantly and do not let the mixture boil.
  4. Cook for about 30 minutes and leave to cool. Cooling may take 30-40 minutes. The required syrup temperature for preparing a cocktail is 25-35°C.

This syrup holds the foam for up to 60 minutes! White and red currants have almost the same ability.

To prepare a cocktail, take the resulting 220 ml of syrup and add to it any juices, tonic herbal teas or herbal infusions in a total volume of 700 ml. Pour in 80ml of licorice syrup, which will help create a foam, and stir all ingredients for 6 minutes. Connect oxygen. The cocktail is ready!

You can fill the drink with air bubbles using oxygen devices: a cocktail mixer, a mixer and a tube with an aerator, which is connected to an oxygen source.

Syrups for oxygen cocktails

Syrups not only have gelling properties, they contain vitamins and microelements that are beneficial for the body. Therefore, they are made based on various herbs and fruits.

  • fruit;
  • berry;
  • berries and fruits with milk;
  • based on herbs that help with colds and viruses;
  • based on herbs for weight loss.

They are boiled in a water bath for 30 minutes, mixing the liquid base with sugar 1:1 or 1:1.5. The base can be grass, which is poured with boiling water and infused for 3-4 hours. If there is no juice, then fruits are cut, mixed with water 50% to 50% and 100% sugar is added. Everything is boiled and strained.

An oxygen cocktail prepared at home does not contain chemicals and has a healing and tonic effect. There are no contraindications for children. In addition, they like to take vitamins in this form.

  • A glass of regular black coffee;
  • 1/5 cup orange juice;
  • 20 ml caramel syrup.

Vanilla syrup

Coffee syrups: where to buy, which is better - Monin or Barline, tastes and recipes.

Coffee is a divine drink with a billion-strong army of fans. Traditional recipes for its production have remained virtually unchanged for centuries. But among coffee drink lovers there are not only conservatives and adherents of ancient traditions, but also new generations who adore and strive to experiment, wanting to get something new. This is how special syrups for coffee appeared and became widespread. Sweet, giving the drink an unusual taste and smell, they originated in the USA, from where they spread to Europe and other parts of the world. Our homeland is currently experiencing a general acquaintance with such additives, and our compatriots definitely like them!

Now this drink is available in most coffee shops, cafes and even restaurants. People are increasingly receiving supplements home to enjoy the fruits of extraordinary tests whenever they please. But in order not to be disappointed, you need to choose and order the best syrups, which are guaranteed to give a more catchy, unforgettable taste.

Preparation

  1. Pour water into a small saucepan or saucepan and add coffee. Bring to a boil, cook for a couple of minutes and remove from heat.
  2. Pour the resulting coffee into a separate bowl, leaving all the grounds at the bottom of the pan.
  3. Pour sugar into a thick-bottomed saucepan and melt completely over low heat. There is no need to stir it; you can only tilt the pan.
  4. Pour coffee into caramelized sugar and stir.
  5. The resulting mixture must be boiled with the lid open over medium heat until it reaches the consistency of syrup. It is often advised to determine the readiness of the syrup by dropping a drop into water: if it remains a drop and does not spread, then the syrup is ready. However, it should be taken into account that the syrup, boiled down so much, will become even thicker as it cools and is perhaps only suitable for decorating baked goods. For wider use, the syrup must be boiled until the moment when, when boiling, its entire surface begins to bubble strongly.
  6. Cool the finished syrup, pour into a clean, dry glass bottle using a funnel and close.
    You can store the finished coffee syrup in a cool, dark place for several months.
  • The syrup can be made even more aromatic by adding 50 ml of cognac or strong tincture to it after removing from the heat.
  • Naturally, coffee syrup is not suitable for children's dishes; it is better to replace it with chocolate syrup.

Main types

Initially, the tradition of adding something else to coffee and tea, in addition to the main product, sugar and milk, appeared in North America around the eighteenth century. But it was connected not so much with the desire to experiment, but with the constant shortage of tea leaves and coffee beans, necessitating their austerity. Over time, the best options for additives became classic for local cuisine, and already at the beginning of the 20th century, special syrups for coffee began to appear, prepared not at home, but on a commercial basis.

Europeans quickly adopted this fashion, adapting South American recipes for themselves and creating completely new ones. At the moment, European manufacturers are first known in the world. Popular coffee syrups are Monin (France), Barline (Our Homeland) and a number of other companies.

Their entire range can be divided into the following main categories:

• spicy, • fruit and berry, • nutty, • dessert-flavored.

They are prepared with natural sugar or its substitutes. In the first case, the price of the product is higher, but the quality and safety also do not cause fluctuations, which is usually important for food products. In the 2nd - the cost is lower, and the taste is the least expressive. Both Monin and Barline are known for using natural ingredients in their own recipes that will bring you nothing but taste pleasure.

If we talk about certain types of coffee syrups, the most popular in the world are:

• Caramel. A tasty addition to a strong drink with a peculiar bitterness. Gives a slight odor and softening taste. Mixes harmoniously with milk and cream, • Vanilla. If you are looking to explore the best popular syrups first, then start here. Mixes with both Robusta and Arabica, making the taste a little sweeter, “killing” the corresponding sourness of these types. The most popular variety of coffee additives in the world!, • Nut. Coffee with chocolate syrup mixes harmoniously with ice cream, cognac and other generous spirits, • Maple. Not a very common variety here, but very popular in North America. It imparts a sweet aftertaste and a woody smell that is unusual for Russians. Perfect for morning consumption. By the way, Americans add such sweetness not only to coffee, but also to desserts, cocktails and other drinks, and also to certain dishes, including fish and meat.

All these types of products are in the lines of the best coffee syrups Monin, Barline and a number of other favorite brands. If ten years ago it was quite difficult to purchase something similar in our country, at least outside of several huge cities, then at the moment it is difficult to amaze anyone with similar products. But, knowing about them, few people have experimented with them until now. If you are not yet familiar with the magical transformation that happens to coffee when you add syrup, it’s time to try one of the varieties outlined above!

In the ranking of coffee syrups, the French brand Monin takes first place.

There are many advantages:

  • natural raw materials for production;
  • small containers so as not to overpay if you don’t like the product;
  • a large assortment for every taste.

Among the domestic brands, Royal Cane can be distinguished.

Monin or Varline – choosing the best brand

The Russian market offers virtually all of the world's most popular brands of syrups created for adding to coffee. Some of them are unreasonably expensive, quite a lot of products are of unknown quality and do not contain enough natural ingredients. There are also plenty of products from unknown brands, from which it is unclear what to expect.

If we talk about products that have the highest consumer properties and are affordable, we need to highlight two brands:

• Monin. One of the best and favorite manufacturers in the world. The assortment consists of 50 product items. Berry, nut, fruit, spicy and even exotic vegetables - there are plenty to choose from. The company has been producing other additives for cocktails and drinks since 1912 and has a good reputation among consumers. Let us note that in Russia these syrups are not particularly popular due to the unusual flavors they create, • Barline. The best Russian manufacturer, successfully promoting products not only in the country, but also in foreign markets. Competes with leading global brands. Offers fresher, more modern and vital recipes. Compared to Monin, Varline sweet additives are distinguished by the lowest price and at least not the lowest quality.

These brands have no other worthy rivals on the Russian market. And if we compare them, then with a very similar range and quality, Barline will cost significantly less than Monin, which allows us to call a Russian company the best choice.

Popular recipes

Recipes for making coffee with sweet additives are varied. Here, every barista has his own secrets and preferences. It is usually believed that one teaspoon of thick syrup is enough for a standard cup of coffee, and less than 2 if the drink is diluted with milk or cream.

As for more favorite recipes, traditional chocolate coffee is prepared like this:

• a portion of a strong drink is brewed in Turkish style, • milk is heated separately (half the volume of the base), • the ingredients are mixed and supplemented with 4 teaspoons of chocolate syrup, • a small portion of vanilla ice cream is placed on top.

Caramel latte is prepared like this:

• a standard portion of espresso is brewed, • milk (half the volume of espresso) is whipped until foamy, • 2-3 tablespoons of syrup are poured into the bottom of the mug, • half of the frothed milk is poured in, • the base is poured in, • the rest of the frothed milk is poured in, • all this sprinkled with grated chocolate.

Drinks with other types of sweet additives are prepared similarly or similarly. The most important thing here is to make the right coffee, and a good syrup will do its job.

Iced latte with syrup

To bring the recipe to life, you will need to prepare a latte coffee drink according to standard recommendations and cool it to room temperature. Then you need to throw ice into an empty glass, pour 50 ml of milk into it, add 20 ml of syrup and carefully pour in the chilled latte. Among the best syrup combinations for this option:

  • Vanilla;
  • Caramel;
  • Coconut;
  • Banana.

If you want to make the taste really bright and unusual, give preference to berry options. Once all the ingredients are in the glass, mix them carefully and enjoy a pleasant, refreshing drink.
