Many people greet the morning with a cup of good coffee. This has long become a reality at home, thanks to coffee makers, including drip type. These simple and inexpensive devices have gained wide popularity among lovers of this drink. Today we’ll talk about how to use a drip coffee maker correctly.
What is a drip coffee maker
The operating principle of a drip coffee maker also determined its name. The water is heated almost to a boil and in this form passes drop by drop through ground coffee placed in a special filter. From there, the finished drink flows in the same drops into the coffee pot.
This is where the name of the device, known at the beginning of the 19th century, came from. Of course, the devices for this procedure were more primitive, but the hot water was just as saturated with the taste and aroma of the grains. Gradually, with the advent of household appliances, electric coffee makers operating on the drip principle were developed.
Around the middle of the 20th century, the device took shape in its modern form and since then has only developed and improved. Currently, machines provide quick preparation of several servings of coffee at once, without any effort. Most of the processes are automated, so the coffee is prepared without outside intervention. All you have to do is add water and ground coffee by hand.
More powerful does not mean better!
A high-performance drip coffee maker circulates boiling water through the ground coffee beans faster. As a result, an insufficiently rich taste of the drink is formed. A device of lower power acts in exactly the opposite way. In its brewing tank, the liquid lingers a little longer, thanks to which it has time to be maximally saturated with all the necessary qualities of ground coffee beans.
Important! To prepare a strong drink, you should use a device with a maximum power of no more than 800 W. The lower the productivity of the drip coffee maker, the longer the coffee brewing procedure.
Device structure
Despite the variety of models produced by manufacturers, the main components are the same for all coffee makers. The design consists of the following parts:
- Container for cold water. In most models, it is non-removable and is located in the back of the coffee maker.
- A tank is also a boiler for heating water.
- A heating element.
- Special container for placing the filter. In some models it may be removable.
- Self-contained filter, reusable or disposable.
- Jug for ready-made drinks of various configurations.
Starting is carried out using a switch. To heat the coffee, there is a plate that is turned on separately, if necessary.
There was noise from inside, the pressure from the horn decreased
If you notice that the water from the coffee machine is flowing poorly and at the same time there is an extraneous whistle or noise, it means that the mesh or the filter itself in the horn is most likely clogged. It won’t be difficult to wash it, not to mention that such repairs won’t take much time. Special products are sold for cleaning coffee machines or coffee makers from grease. You can also carefully remove debris with a toothpick. The main thing is that when repairing a coffee machine on your own, do not scratch the internal containers, as even small scratches will retain the ground coffee, which contributes to the rapid clogging of the equipment.
If the coffee machine is noisy and does not pour coffee well, it may even be because the filter is clogged due to the coffee beans being ground too strongly. Start the repair by opening the container with coffee beans and checking the grind size. If you see coffee dust, adjust the grind size manually (many coffee machines have this function). Well, the last reason for extraneous noise is wear of the internal pump mechanism, as a result of which the coffee machine makes noise, hums and does not pour water well. In this case, the weak pressure can only be repaired by replacing the pump.
How does a drip coffee maker work?
The general operating principle of drip coffee makers has been preserved for more than 200 years. They differ only in their modern design and useful additional functions.
A drip coffee maker works as follows:
- Water is poured into a tank located at the rear, and from there it flows by gravity into the heating boiler.
- Hot water rises through the tube.
- Here it passes in the form of drops through the coffee powder poured into the filter.
- The water absorbs all the best qualities of the ground grains and enters the jug in the same drops.
- When the water runs out and stops dripping, the coffee is considered completely ready.
Remaining powder in the form of coffee grounds remains inside the filter, which is washed or thrown away if it is disposable. The area where the jug is installed can be heated, keeping the drink hot for a set time.
Types of filters
The filter is considered an important element of the coffee maker. It determines how fully the beneficial properties of ground coffee will be transferred to hot water.
Reusable
Many coffee makers are initially equipped with reusable filters. The following products are mainly used:
- Metal. Requires cleaning and washing after each use. The drink may contain small particles of grounds and acquire an unpleasant metallic taste.
- Nylon. Can be used 60-80 times. It is also necessary to wash after each use.
- "Golden". In fact, they are nylon with titanium coating, which extends their service life.
How to use a drip coffee maker correctly
A drip coffee maker can quickly prepare Americano with great taste and aroma. A good result can be achieved by first studying the operating instructions.
Those who first encountered this device should be guided by the following rules:
- Connect the device to a voltage source.
- Water is carefully poured into the tank.
- A filter is installed in the container. Next, it is filled with ground coffee in the amount of 1 teaspoon per 0.1 liter of water. In the future, the dosage can be adjusted to your own taste.
- The coffee pot for the finished product is installed on the platform.
- Press the start button and start the device. Further, all processes are performed automatically.
- Wait until the drink is ready and remove the jug from the stand.
- It is advisable to rinse a reusable filter immediately before it dries out, and simply throw away a disposable filter.
Exact adherence to the rules does not always lead to the desired result. Preparation, which is also carried out in a certain order, is of great importance. Much depends on the coffee itself, the water used, various additives and other factors.
Rules for a delicious drink from a coffee maker, types of devices
It is easy to prepare a drink in any coffee maker. This does not require any special skills; the main thing is to choose the right combination of coffee beans and decide on the volume of water. With the right proportions, you get a tasty and tonic drink.
How to brew coffee in a coffee maker depends on its type. The following types of coffee makers are distinguished:
- geyser;
- carob;
- drip.
The easiest to use and affordable is a drip coffee maker. It is designed in such a way as to quickly prepare ground grains. It consists of a filter into which ground grains are poured, a container for water and a receiver into which the finished drink arrives. When you turn on the electrical appliance, the water begins to heat up to boiling temperature and drops in small portions into the filter and passes through the ground grains. In a few minutes the drink will be ready.
Such a machine may have a built-in filter that will have to be washed after each use. There are machines with disposable filters that are thrown away after use. Typically, drip coffee makers have a large receptacle for the finished drink, as they are designed for family use. It is believed that they prepare American-style coffee.
A geyser coffee maker is designed differently. It can be powered or installed on a stove. The coffee maker consists of a container for water, the finished drink, a filter and a tube. The principle of operation is to heat water, which, under steam pressure, enters the filter with coffee, and then into the receiver.
The carob coffee maker is closest to the coffee machine. You can brew good espresso in it. Here, instead of a filter, a plastic or metal horn is used, into which already ground grain is poured and water flows under steam pressure. Ground grains are not just poured, but pressed. To make coffee in such a device, you need to gain a little experience.
The taste of the final drink depends on the degree of grinding of the beans.
You can make a delicious drink at home in many ways, but a coffee maker is convenient because it does not require human intervention, is cheap, and easy to maintain. Watch how the invigorating drink is prepared in the video.
Now about the subtleties. Before using an electrical appliance, you should read the instructions and recommendations. They usually tell you what grinding of beans is preferable, how many grams of product should be poured into the filter for one serving, and so on.
Typically, a medium grind size is suitable for a coffee maker. But for geyser grinding, coarse grinding is preferable, for drip grinding, fine grinding, and for carob grinding, very fine grinding. By correctly choosing the degree of grinding, the coffee particles better release their aromas and flavors.
It is better to buy premium whole beans, consisting of 80-90% Arabica. They need to be ground before preparing the drink to the degree that is preferable for the type of electrical appliance. For 1-2 tsp. ground beans will require from 100 to 180 ml of water.
Helpful tips before making coffee
The preparatory stage is no less important than the process of making coffee itself. This largely determines how tasty and high-quality the finished drink will be.
Therefore, when preparing for cooking, you need to pay attention to the following:
- Only purified bottled water is used. It is guaranteed not to spoil the taste of coffee and will protect the device from scale.
- After grinding, the coffee powder is placed in an airtight container. All beneficial properties will remain for a long time.
- It is recommended to preheat the jug where the finished coffee is collected.
- It is strictly forbidden to use broken or damaged filters. In this case, the coffee maker is highly likely to fail.
Grinding degree and dosage
To prepare coffee in drip coffee makers, coarse grinding of beans is most often used, the same as for pour over.
However, the degree of grinding can be changed. This will help reveal some of the taste characteristics of the finished drink. For example, a finer grind will add richness to the drink, while a coarser grind will allow you to fully experience the sweetness and acidity.
As for the dosage, you can also experiment here to get new taste sensations. For example, if you increase the amount of water, the taste of coffee will become brighter and richer, but at the same time the drink will be more watery. If you do the opposite and increase the dosage of coffee, the drink will accordingly become denser and its taste less intense.
Coffee grind level.
What determines the taste of brewed coffee?
The properties of the final product depend on many factors. True coffee connoisseurs, who consistently achieve high results, always adhere to generally accepted rules and recommendations. These tips include:
- Beans should not be roasted over a long period of time. The maximum period is 2 months. During this period, oxidation of essential oils occurs, evaporation of active components even in closed packaging. When purchasing coffee beans, you should check the roasting date.
- After opening the package, the grain should not be stored in it for more than 7 days. During this time, some part will oxidize and evaporate, and after the specified period, there will be even more losses. The drink will no longer have such a bright and rich taste as when using fresh grain. For home use, it is better to buy small packs of grains - no more than 250 grams, which is just enough for a week.
- The grain, ground into powder, must be used within half an hour. During this period, essential oils actively evaporate and after 30 minutes many properties will simply be lost. If you compare drinks made from freshly ground beans and after a 30-minute pause, their taste will be significantly different.
- Water mineralization is average, from 75 to 150 mg per 1 liter. With low mineralization, many unpleasant components are drawn out of coffee along with beneficial substances. At high levels, on the contrary, most of the nutrients will remain in the grains. There are special instruments for measuring water mineralization. They are used not only in coffee shops, but also at home.
- Grinding quality. The release of the taste qualities of coffee to water largely depends on this. The smaller the particles, the higher the rate of absorption of nutrients. With the same grain sizes, extraction occurs simultaneously in each of them. The beneficial substances are extracted evenly, and the coffee quality is close to ideal.
- Extraction percentage. The most optimal figure is considered to be in the range of 18.5-21%. Individual components are extracted at different speeds: first, volatile aromatic substances leave, followed by sweetness, and caffeine and bitterness complete the process. In real coffee, they are all optimally balanced and complement each other in taste. The ideal balance is achieved experimentally by varying the grind size and water temperature.
- Timely cleaning of equipment. After use, the walls of the device are covered with particles of powder and essential oils. If they are not removed, they can oxidize and gradually stick to the surface. This will cause the drink to feel rancid, the further it goes, the more so. It is recommended to care for the coffee grinder daily, using improvised or special cleaning products for cleaning.

Pros and cons of drip coffee makers
There are many coffee makers, but the easiest to use are drip, carob and capsule models. They all differ in their advantages and disadvantages. Among the advantages are the following:
- The drip device can work with any ground coffee.
- All devices are compact in size and easily fit in the kitchen.
- Simple control, start-up is done by pressing a button. All other actions are performed automatically until the process is completed.
- Drip and capsule models do not have complex mechanisms.
- The filter prevents coffee grounds from entering the cup.
- All coffee machines can be easily and quickly washed from dirt.
- The results are aromatic drinks with a mild taste.
- You can prepare other drinks - tea or cocoa.
As with other devices, there are some downsides:
- A drip coffee maker cannot make strong coffee. Water passes through the powder without pressure, so less flavors and nutrients get into it.
- Carob and capsule models require certain varieties and varieties.
- The design of a carob coffee maker is more complex due to the pump and other components.
- Frequent filter replacement and increased coffee consumption.
Advantages of a coffee maker with auto shut-off:
Water poured into the container is boiled in full. Next, the heating mode is turned on for a certain time. At the end of the set period, the coffee maker automatically turns off. Thus, there is no need to constantly monitor the device so that the water does not boil out of it.
“Recommend specific models, please”
In general, due to the fact that in 95% of drip coffee makers the coffee should be the same, the choice can be made based on appearance, price and availability in stores. Yes, there are, of course, a couple of objective parameters: volume, type of filter used (is there a reusable one included), the presence of additional functions, the most common: automatic shutdown after some time and a timer for the start of cooking.
The most important nuance is that outright “Chinese goods”, which, as expected, comes at a price, and, therefore, savings on something, can present a surprise, for example, with a falling-off coffee compartment or a plastic taste in the final drink due to the use of the most shameful plastic .
As with other equipment, you can buy proven equipment, but by paying a little more, you can play the lottery with the quality of materials. There are “Chinese” with relatively decent plastic, the smell of which is washed out during the first few preparations (by the way, a couple of idle preparations need to be done even for the most expensive coffee maker), with reliable heaters and water tanks that do not leak on the 3rd day.
But no one, not even me, will give you a 100% guarantee. The quality of products from such brands varies from batch to batch, and some people get a device that will work for 10 years, while others take it back to the store after the first use. Below I will give several examples with explanations from different price/quality groups.
Compact, small-volume drip coffee makers, with tanks from 600 to 900 ml:
- More expensive, better quality: Philips HD7434 (volume 900 ml, includes a reusable nylon filter, my review of this model) or HD7434 (600 ml).
- Cheaper, simpler, but you can use: Redmond RCM-M1507 (600 ml, reusable nylon, review) or Maxwell MW-1650 BK (600 ml, reusable nylon, review).
Prices for the indicated models in your region:
Large drip coffee makers, with liter tanks
- More expensive, better quality, from reputable brands: Bosch TKA 3A031 / 3A034 (1.25 liters, disposable filters, auto shut-off, my review), Philips HD 7447 or HD 7457 (1.2 liters, disposable filters, review).
- Cheaper, simpler, but you can use: Vitek VT-1503 BK (1.2 liters, reusable filter, review), Polaris PCM 1211 (1.2 liters, reusable filter, review).
Prices:
Large coffee makers with start and start timers
- More expensive, better quality – Philips HD 7459 (1.2 liters, disposable filters, auto shut-off after 30 minutes, review).
- Cheaper, but also nothing - Redmond RCM-1510 (1.5 liters, reusable nylon filter, auto shut-off after 40 minutes, review).
- Melitta Optima Timer is a serious unit with additional functions besides the timer: programming heating time, adjusting water hardness and decalcification program, removable water tank (review, about Optima towards the end)
Prices:
PS When purchasing ground coffee for use in a drip coffee maker, it is better to look for a special grind “for drip coffee machines” or “for filter coffee”. This phrase is often not translated into Russian, so pay attention to the characteristic pictograms (like on the Julius Meinl pack in the photo below). Other recommendations for choosing coffee are here.
Step-by-step instructions for use
Before using the coffee maker, it must be prepared for use. A new device sometimes smells like plastic and may emit other technical odors. Therefore, the following steps must be taken beforehand:
- Water is poured into the entire volume of the tank. There is no need to install a filter or pour powder inside the container.
- Turn on the device and wait until all the water follows the intended paths inside the coffee maker and collects in the coffee pot.
- The device turns off and remains in this form along with water for 15-20 minutes.
- The procedure should be repeated at least 3 times. During this time, foreign odors will completely disappear and the device can be used for its intended purpose.
Before you start using it, be sure to read the instructions on how to use the coffee maker. In any case, all actions are performed in several stages:
- Filling with water. It is poured at the very beginning, in the quantity necessary to obtain certain qualities of the drink - strength and taste. Monitor the upper level and do not overfill. During filling, water should not get on other parts of the device.
- Filter installation. Placed in a special container. Can be reusable - nylon or metal. Disposable paper filters are often used - more convenient and effective. Thanks to their use, it is possible to completely avoid the unpleasant tastes characteristic of reusable elements.
- Adding ground coffee. Typically, 1 cup requires 2-3 teaspoons. The required amount of powder is poured directly into the filter. The jug for the finished drink should be in its place. The device turns on, the coffee is prepared and collected in a container. The whole process takes on average 4-10 minutes. If there is no automatic shut-off, you must turn off the coffee maker yourself.
What to look for when purchasing
When deciding to purchase a drip coffee maker, you should consider a number of important characteristics:
- Capacity of the coffee maker. Within the functional cycle, the device is capable of preparing from one to one and a half liters of aromatic drink. At the same time, the required minimum has also been established. Most often it is equal to two servings. When choosing a coffee maker, proceed from the taste preferences in coffee drinks of your family members. For the office, it is worth purchasing a device with the largest volume.
- The container for the final product is made of heat-resistant glass or food-grade polymer. It is best to opt for a glass vessel, since the resulting drink will not have an extraneous taste, unlike plastic containers, especially in inexpensive models. In addition to the material from which the flask is made, there are no less significant indicators. The rectangular coffee pot and tight-fitting lid ensure that the coffee aroma is preserved. Regardless of the type of surface of the appliance bowl, it can always be placed in a microwave oven to reheat a chilled drink.
- Regarding the filter holder, the retractable compartment is more convenient to use than the removable one. Keep this in mind when purchasing a coffee maker.
- The presence of an anti-drip damper. A very practical option, but it is still recommended to use it as little as possible. If the position of the coffee container is violated, a component is activated that blocks the supply of the finished product. When you return the cup to the coffee maker, it automatically refills. Pay special attention to this feature. If you overcook the brewed coffee, the brewing procedure will still continue, and liquid accumulated in the wrong place will damage the filter element or break the machine. Be careful and only turn on the coffee maker if all components are intact and in place.
- Some coffee maker designs have a water filter installed. This is a rather convenient device for those who use low-quality running water. Regardless of the presence or absence of a filter system, you should not jeopardize the serviceability of the coffee maker and only use water that has been purified from impurities.
- An option such as tank heating will be indispensable for owners of coffee makers with large capacity. At the base of the coffee maker there is a built-in heating circuit that allows you to maintain the required temperature of the prepared drink at least 65 degrees for two hours.
- The presence of a filling indicator, which makes it possible to control the level of liquid in the container.
- Compartment for storing the network cable in the coffee maker body. Of course, this is not so significant, but it is very convenient when the wire does not interfere with work, but is conveniently folded and hidden in the appropriate compartment.
Rules of care
How to clean a drip coffee maker
The reliability and durability of the coffee maker largely depends on timely and proper care. An important element is to wash the device after each use. Reusable filters are washed with water, and better cleaning is carried out at least once a month. This procedure is performed using citric acid according to the following scheme:
- Citric acid (30 g) is mixed with water (500 ml). After the crystals have completely dissolved, another half liter is added.
- Half of the finished liquid is poured into the reservoir, after which the device must be turned on and started in the operating cycle.
- Wait until the water has completely drained into the coffee pot and turn off the device.
- The machine remains in this form for 20 minutes, after which the remainder of the solution is poured into the container again, and the coffee maker is put into operation.
- After the solution has completely flowed into the coffee pot, you need to run clean water through the device 2-3 times to remove the remaining solution.
What to wash with: Household and special products
The maximum positive result can be achieved using a special household chemical intended for cleaning coffee makers. For this purpose, descaling tablets Topper 3043/3044 are used. They apply as follows:
- The tablet is released from the protective film and placed in the reservoir.
- Hot water is poured into the container. After the tablet has completely dissolved, a full operating cycle is activated to remove scale.
- After cleaning, the device must also be run with clean water 2-3 times to remove the remaining cleaning agent from the internal parts.

To prepare the drink in an American coffee machine, you can choose Essse Americano, a blend of Arabica and Robusta with an intense flavor and moderate strength. Available in a tin can.
So, using a filter coffee maker is as easy as peeling pears. You already know how much and what type of coffee to pour into the filter. All that remains is to fill the container with high-quality water, adjust the power, wait a few minutes and enjoy delicious hot coffee!
Review of popular brands
Drip coffee makers are simple and easy to use - they do not require special barista skills to operate. The key to a tasty drink is high-quality raw materials.
Most coffee brands have products in their range that are the best option for this method. To choose coffee for a drip coffee maker, you must first pay attention to the grind.
In drip coffee makers, coffee consumption is higher than with other preparation methods (60 grams per 1 liter of water or 2 heaped teaspoons per 150 ml). Suitable products are often found in large 500 gram packages.
