Disputes continue about who came up with the original recipe for chilled coffee. It is called glace or glasse. Many people do not know how to write and say this word correctly, which syllable the emphasis should fall on, due to the unclear origin of the name of the coffee drink.
The pronunciation of elements of foreign vocabulary is inextricably linked with their sound in the native language.
How did iced coffee come about? Origin story
Both the Austrians and the French are called the creators of the soft drink.
There is one fascinating legend about a resourceful Austrian barista. One day a visitor came to him and ordered a cappuccino. There was no milk, but the barista was not lost and replaced the missing ingredient with ice cream. The client was delighted! After this incident, the young man asked to make just such coffee.
The French took note of the recipe and gave the name to the unusual drink. "Glacé" is a French word that means "icy."
Popular latte and latte macchiato recipes
The classic latte recipe is considered an example of how to make a latte. Cooking steps:
Brew coffee, filter it and leave 50 ml. Lightly heat the milk to 30-40 degrees in the microwave. Whip the milk for 3-4 minutes until foamy
This should be done at high speed, preferably with a mixer or blender. Heat a large glass or glass a little in the microwave. Pour the foamed milk into the prepared container. Next, carefully add coffee. You can help yourself with the tip of a fork or knife. Spread the remaining foam onto the surface of the drink with a small spoon. Your latte is ready!
Pay attention to the quality of the coffee and milk you use, because it is good ingredients that give great taste. Choose mild coffees or blends with the least amount of robusta
Macchiato can be prepared in many ways. But the traditional recipe is always taken as a basis. To prepare the drink at home you will need:
- half a glass of milk;
- espresso – 60-70 ml;
- For decoration you can use cinnamon or grated chocolate.
The recipe consists of the following steps:
- It is necessary to heat the milk (but do not bring it to a boil). Beat the stable foam with a mixer or whisk. Pour the milk with foam into a tall transparent glass.
- The finished espresso should be carefully poured into the milk. You don’t need to pour it all out at once, you should try to pour it out in a thin stream. The layers may not work out right away, this is a matter of practice.
- Place the milk foam that remains in a separate container on top.
- To decorate, add cinnamon or chocolate, if desired. You can also sprinkle cocoa or add a little sugar.
There are recipes that suggest adding syrup. You can also do this at the initial stage - pour a third into a glass, mix the rest with milk and whisk until foamy. Some people use caramel instead of syrup.
These aromatic, delicate drinks are not at all difficult to prepare. The main thing is to understand which type suits you best and choose quality ingredients. Taking classic recipes as a basis, you can safely experiment, because now you know the differences between latte and macchiato.
We pronounce and write correctly: glace or glasse?
Since the word “glace” is of French origin, it must be pronounced with the emphasis on the last syllable according to the rules of the native language.
But writing is more difficult. For a long time, the name of the drink was written with a double consonant “glace”, and double spelling was considered the norm. However, if we now look into a spelling or explanatory dictionary of the Russian language, we will see only one correct version of “glase”. This is what you should follow when writing the name of a delicious coffee drink.
Remember! Correct: glyse (with emphasis on the last syllable)!
What kind of word “coffee” is it - masculine or neuter?
For centuries, there have been heated discussions about the use of the word coffee in Russian. These contradictions arose from the fact that all indeclinable words borrowed from other languages and ending with the letter “e” had a neuter noun.
But why in literature has the word coffee always been used in the masculine gender? There is a reasonable explanation for this. The fact is that when this drink first appeared in Russia, it began to be called nothing more than coffee or coffee . And only much later, the outdated word coffee was replaced with the familiar modern word coffee. Since then, the word coffee has a masculine gender. Although many writers and simply educated people wrote and pronounced this word in the neuter gender - black coffee.
In 2002, the Ministry of Education made its own adjustments to this issue. According to the new rules, the word coffee is allowed to be used in both the masculine and neuter gender, but only in colloquial speech. It is also important to know that if we are talking about a drink, then it would be more correct to talk about coffee in the masculine gender . If we are talking about a plant, a coffee tree, then the word is used in the neuter gender.

Differences between latte and cappuccino
In the modern world, it is difficult to find a person who has never tried a latte or cappuccino in his entire life.
However, not everyone knows the difference between them. Also, many people make a mistake in the word “cappuccino”, believing that it contains double letters. At the same time, in the word “latte” the stress always remains on the first syllable. The main difference between a cappuccino and a latte is, first of all, that the latter is not coffee. In fact, a latte is just a coffee drink; sometimes it is also called a cocktail. It may follow from this that the volume of coffee in a cappuccino is much larger than the entire drink. If you rely on the classic latte recipe that we described above, two servings of milk are required per serving of espresso (milk foam can also be used). For cappuccino, each ingredient has the same proportions.
Proportions of milk and espresso in cappuccino and latte.
Even their foams are different. Of course, milk foam in any case should have a uniform consistency and no air bubbles. But the significant difference is that thicker foam is used for cappuccino. When the foam does not fall off when sugar gets on it, this means that the drink is prepared correctly.
However, both drinks still have similarities. Namely, the method of their preparation. First, a portion of coffee is poured, then milk is added. It must first be heated to a certain temperature. Usually it is about sixty degrees.
The serving method also differs for each type of coffee. For cappuccino, cups of 180 milliliters are usually used, no more. With this volume you get a better balance between milk and espresso. To ensure that there is enough milk for the entire coffee, it is better to use cups with an expanded top.
For both latte and cappuccino, the same temperature is acceptable, no higher than seventy degrees. By adding frothed milk to the drink, you can use it to create various patterns on the surface. There is a special technique called latte art.
In conclusion, we can conclude that the similarities between the two types are only in the method of preparation. Everything else is completely different.
