How to dye your hair with coffee at home

Coffee has been used to color hair for centuries, and in Eastern cultures it is still used today more often than industrial dye, since it is cheaper and at the same time beneficial for hair. Of course, the effect is much less permanent, but if you introduce coffee hair coloring into your standard personal care routine, and do it about once a week, the color will accumulate and your curls will become healthier, bouncier and shinier. Today we will tell you how to dye your hair with coffee correctly.

Pros and cons of coffee hair coloring

Factories that produce hair dyes use more than 4,000 synthetic compounds, some of which are recognized as carcinogenic. Coffee contains up to 2000 substances, but all of these are natural components. The procedure can be carried out at home, using recipes with various components to achieve the desired effect.

Benefits of coffee coloring:

  • It has a positive effect on the cortex, strengthens it, the hair becomes thicker and the hairstyle looks voluminous;
  • Awakens and strengthens hair follicles;
  • Gives natural shine due to natural oils;
  • Pure coffee without additives slightly dries the oily roots, which makes the washing procedure less frequent;
  • Nourishes and moisturizes the strand along its length;
  • Relieves skin from dandruff;
  • Eliminates static effect;
  • Stimulates the growth and appearance of new vellus hairs;
  • Makes curls more manageable;
  • Smoothes scales, fights split ends;
  • Reduces hair loss and helps fight baldness.

After some time of regular use of coffee, the hair better tolerates the thermal effects of a hair dryer, curling iron, flat iron, and curlers.

Disadvantages of coffee hair coloring:

  • Short term - washes off in 3-4 washes;
  • Does not cover gray hair and light blond hair well enough;
  • The procedure takes longer than painting with regular paint;
  • It's difficult to get the right shade the first time.

Which henna is better to buy?

Today you can buy not only henna powder, but also compressed briquettes, and in both forms, henna perfectly retains its qualities. To use in recipes, the henna in the bars will need to be grated to a powder state.

Why do you want to sleep after coffee?

As a rule, henna is available in four shades:

  • red;
  • brown;
  • chestnut;
  • black.

If you are not planning dramatic changes, then it is better to choose brown and chestnut for hair coloring. But if you are not afraid of experiments, then you can choose red.

The final color will depend on the shade chosen, the proportions, and the exposure time.

Who is coffee hair coloring suitable for: effect for blondes, brunettes, fair-haired, redheads

Coffee only darkens the hair by a few shades, but it can color it unevenly.
Depending on the initial shade and condition of the curls, completely different results are possible: Coffee hair coloring is usually not suitable for blondes, since the strands are colored unevenly, and the effect of burnt hair is possible. However, you can try on one strand, and if the tone suits you, very carefully apply the mask over the entire length. In extreme cases, the color will wash out in about a week, so if you really want it, you can try it. But don’t do your first coloring before especially important events where you need to look perfect.

  • Coffee goes well on brown hair, usually without redness. Darkens by one or two shades, depending on the concentration and exposure time. You can get very interesting tones of coffee with milk or honey-coffee shades.
  • On dark hair, coffee reveals slightly reddish tones, makes the color deep, rich, and a healthy shine appears the first time. In Eastern cultures, which specifically dye their hair with coffee, most women have dark hair, and coffee dye fits perfectly on it. If you want a slight color update, coffee is a great choice.
  • Red coffee dyeing helps give your hair a deep copper tint, making it a little dark, but at the same time with deep tones, the hair immediately begins to shine. This is a way to slightly dim the natural brightness of a redhead, but without losing your individuality.
  • Gray hair can be given some coffee tint, but usually this is for one time, before the first wash. Or the color will still be pale. You won't be able to become a brunette with the help of coffee, but this is an opportunity to make the image a little more interesting, slightly change the natural shade without harming weakened strands.

When coloring for the first time, always test the color on one inconspicuous strand! And do this a few hours in advance to be sure of the result, and keep the dye on for the same amount of time, but this time on your entire hair.

How to choose paint

You can get the desired color by using oil-based paints. Their composition does not contain harmful compounds. Such dyes will add the necessary shade to the strands, but they are not able to radically remove the natural color. After 3-4 head care procedures, the product is washed out, so monthly coloring is required if used.

Regular dye (permanent) lasts a long time on the hair, but it contains chemical compounds that penetrate deep into the hair, causing damage.

When choosing paint, consider:

  • Paint stands are suitable for radical painting. Such products can cover gray hair and give a rich shade. The downside to their use is the aggressive effect on the hair, unsafe for women prone to allergies and for pregnant women.
  • Natural dyes in tinting products guarantee a gentle effect. Coloring without the use of ammonia requires systematic renewal of color and constant restoration of curls.

Permanent paints allow you to get the desired shade faster, and the achieved result is fixed more reliably with their use. Thanks to the reaction that the oxidizing agent and the coloring base enter into when mixed, the color pigment is able to penetrate deep into the hair.

They contain additives that protect curls from washing out and damage. Having decided on the product, conduct a sensitivity test. 2-4 hours before staining, apply a little solution to the skin in the area of the elbow (outside) or behind the ear. An allergic reaction will manifest itself as burning and redness, dizziness, rash, and swelling.

Coffee hair coloring recipes

There are two fundamentally different ways to dye your hair:

  • Pure coffee infusion is applied to already washed hair and dried, preferably in the sun. This gives the hair color and shine.
  • Coffee is used as a component of masks, and then they wash their hair with shampoos. You get an additional effect from the mask; your curls become soft and silky.

In most cases, coffee is the base ingredient, and a variety of components are added to it, as in other hair masks (yolk, cognac, henna, kefir, oils, etc.). With the addition of coffee, all masks will color your hair. All proportions and volumes are given for medium length; for long ones, increase the number of components!

To remove aromas of coffee, cognac, eggs, etc. after coloring, add lemon, orange, or any other essential oils to the mask. A couple of drops is enough for medium hair!

Natural coffe

You need to brew a lot, about 1.5-2 liters of drink. It’s convenient to take a 100 gram pack of coffee and pour boiling water over it. Let it brew, strain through a filter to get rid of the grounds. Wash your hair with shampoo and apply conditioner. Take 2 basins. Water your hair with coffee infusion, distributing it along the length. Switching basins in places, perform 15-20 rinses.

Alternatively, you can pour the infusion into a spray bottle and spray all over your hair, then dry it naturally.

Natural coffee + balm

Brew 200 ml of strong natural coffee, approximately 1.5 tablespoons. Cook over low heat, let it brew and cool. Mix 2 tablespoons of ground coffee, an infusion of already brewed and cooled coffee, stir in a balm or any mask to a thick consistency.

Instant coffee + balm

Soluble granules or powder are not useful at all, but in emergency cases you can use them. 2 heaped tablespoons per 80-100 ml of balm.

Coffee grounds + colorless henna

Fill the package of colorless henna with warm water until it becomes thick sour cream. Prepare coffee at the rate of 2 tablespoons per 200 ml. Drain the liquid and add the grounds to the bowl with the henna. Let it sit for half an hour.

Natural coffee + cognac + egg + butter

This mask perfectly restores even dry, brittle hair. Take 2 tablespoons of cognac, an egg yolk, a spoonful of olive or flaxseed oil, a tablespoon of finely ground natural coffee. Mix everything, add a couple of tablespoons of water for ease of application.

Application

To start the painting process, you need to stock up on all the necessary equipment: plastic or rubber gloves, a wooden or plastic comb, a regular sponge or wide brush, a bowl with a deep bottom. Those with long curls will need fixing clips.

The coloring mixture is prepared according to a basic recipe, which can be supplemented or changed (depending on the desired shade).

To do this, you need to combine a twenty-five-gram bag of henna with 50-100 g of coffee and pour freshly boiled water over them, then stir thoroughly until it becomes a homogeneous paste. To prevent it from cooling down, the container must be placed in a water bath. The brightness of the color depends on the temperature of the resulting paint.

Then apply the resulting mixture evenly to clean, dry strands and wrap your head in film, putting something warm on top. After some time (from half an hour to six hours), you will need to wash off the dye with warm water without shampoo.

For gray hair:

Add basma to the mixture of henna, liquid and coffee (in a ratio of 1:1:1). It will avoid redness and give your hair a darker color. For better results, it is better to increase the exposure time.

To obtain chestnut color:

Pour half a glass of dry onion peel with hot water to cover it completely. Boil everything together and let stand for about half an hour. Then heat the mixture again and bring to a boil, add 1 teaspoon of black tea and again let it brew for about 30 minutes. Then you need to repeat the boiling procedure again, and after waiting for half an hour, add 1 tablespoon of coffee and henna. To prevent the mixture from cooling down, you need to periodically heat the bowl with the mixture in a water bath. The resulting mixture should be applied to the hair and kept for 40 minutes under film and a thick towel. The longer the exposure time, the more intense the color.

Owners of dry hair should:

Add conditioner (¼ cup) to the main recipe, which will soften and moisturize damaged ends.

The resulting hair color depends not only on the composition and temperature of the dye mixture, but also on the duration of exposure. Many women cover their heads with film and insulate the top with a terry towel or scarf.

Coffee hair coloring process

Anything that colors your curls will color everything else. Take clothes that wash easily and wrap a towel around your shoulders. The paint will drip and splatter.

  • Masks are applied to dirty, dry hair.
  • Take a thin comb or a special brush. You can either separate your hair into strands, as they do in a salon, or dye the roots first, and then apply the product to the entire length.
  • Wrap your head in film or put on and tie a bag, as the mass will drain.
  • Additionally, wrap your hair over the film with a towel.
  • To make the paint take on faster, warm up your head, wrapped in a bag and a towel, with a hairdryer, this will speed up the reaction. Don't sit in a draft: the more heat, the better.
  • Leave the paint on for at least half an hour, preferably an hour or even two. The longer you keep it, the brighter and darker the color will be.
  • Rinse off with warm (not hot!) water and shampoo. You may have to repeat twice. It is better to use environmentally friendly shampoos without SLS. If you used grounds, you will have to rinse for a long time to remove small particles.

Advice from professionals

To wash off homemade paint, regular shampoo will do. If the coffee aroma is not satisfactory for some reason, then add essential oils to the water when rinsing.

You can dye your hair three days before an important event where you don’t want the smell of coffee on your hair, or wash your hair three times. Using the latter method, the smell will disappear on the same day

The frequency of the procedure can be adjusted as desired.

To make the tone more rich, coffee can be mixed with basma or henna, but in this case it is more difficult to adjust the resulting shade. It is selected empirically. You should know that the results will not be positive if unnatural dyes have recently been used or a perm has been done. It is recommended to wait until the hair is at least partially restored to its normal state.

Coffee hair coloring: reviews from those who have already tried it

Anyone who cares about their hair and wants to make its color darker or deeper should try coffee coloring. The tint washes off in about a week and does not cause any damage to the hair, so it is absolutely safe.

Anna, 28 years old:

I’ve been dyeing my hair with coffee for 2 years now, I have my own shade – light brown, mousy. Coffee makes it chocolatey and looks very interesting. I apply a mask with conditioner for half an hour, twice a week, before washing my hair. The hair does not deteriorate, silky, soft. I am very pleased!

Marina, 33 years old:

At first I used coffee simply as a rinse, as everyone recommends - for blondes - chamomile, for brunettes - coffee. After a while, I noticed that my hair not only became better, but also the color was richer, deeper, slightly chestnut, and shimmered in the sun. Sometimes I apply masks with cognac, they make my hair grow faster.

Lena, 49 years old, private hairdresser:

I recommend coffee to my clients who just want to “refresh their color.” In practice, I was convinced that it does not harm any types of hair, and the curls invariably become better. It works like a tonic, but without any chemicals. And most people really like the light coffee aroma afterwards!

There are practically no negative reviews about coffee hair coloring on forums. Perhaps the unevenness of color in blondes due to insufficiently high-quality dyeing of the strands.

Instructions for use

Helpful tips from professionals will come in handy for those who first decided to dye their locks with an invigorating drink at home. They will allow you to get the maximum benefit from coffee for your strands.

  1. There are a lot of recipes for coffee coloring products, and almost each of them gives a certain shade depending on the original hair color. To ensure that the results do not disappoint, it is recommended that each product prepared for the first time be tested on a separate strand hidden somewhere in the depths of your hair. This will help weed out products whose results do not suit you.
  2. The recipes give approximate dosages for medium hair length. Adjust them to your liking, leaving the proportions specified in the recipe unchanged, otherwise you may end up with a dirty brown stain instead of a beautiful coffee shade.
  3. Blondes will not be able to dye their hair with coffee at home: the result is too unpredictable and will more likely disappoint than please. The main indications for such products are dark and red hair.
  4. No need to expect miracles from coffee hair coloring. Since it does not contain chemical components, the shade will not last long on the strands, and the product will have to be used again and again. But with each subsequent use, the shade will become richer and more beautiful.
  5. Use only natural coffee for coloring, but never instant coffee.
  6. If the coloring mask turns out to be quite thick in consistency, carefully rub it into the scalp to nourish the roots and enhance the effect of coffee on the hair pigment. Then the mixture is distributed along the entire length of the strands.
  7. If the coloring agent is simply coffee liquid, you will need to rinse your curls with it several times.
  8. Be careful with ingredients that contain coffee grounds or just ground coffee. The product, of course, turns out to be as effective and useful as possible, if not for one BUT: in its frozen form, it may not be completely washed out of the strands when rinsed, it may remain in them, complicate the combing process and generally fray the nerves, despite the effective resulting color.
  9. It is advisable not to wash your hair before the coloring procedure. Hair should be dry and dirty.
  10. Since coffee cannot harm either the strands themselves or the scalp, you can keep the coloring composition on your hair from 30 minutes to 2 hours - depending on how much free time you have available.
  11. Be sure to apply insulation over the coffee coloring mixture applied to your hair. For a greenhouse effect, wrap the strands in a plastic bag (some people prefer to wear a plastic shower cap), and be sure to make a “turban” out of a towel on top.
  12. Coffee coloring compounds are easily washed off with any shampoo.
  13. The frequency of their use depends on everyone’s personal preferences.
  14. If you don't want the smell of coffee to remain on your hair, use essential oils when rinsing.
  15. If your hair turns out greasy and sticky after coloring, add hair conditioner to any color mask.

  2. Blondes and gray hair should use coffee as a dye carefully; there may be risks of uneven color.
