Frappuccino is a drink made with milk, coffee and whipped cream. The name comes from two words: “frappe”, which translates as “chilled”, and “cappuccino”. Today, this drink can only be found in the Starbucks coffee chain; Frappuccino has become an integral brand of this chain. The average cost of the drink is 200-400 rubles, depending on the recipe. In some coffee shops the cocktail may be called differently. And speaking of pronunciation, the emphasis in this word falls on the third syllable. And it can be used in both the neuter and masculine genders. Both options comply with the rules of the Russian language. That is, you can say “I have one Frappuccino” and “I have one Frappuccino”, and both options will be correct.
General concept of Frappuccino
This signature cocktail owes its name to two words: “frappe” and “cappuccino”. And if everything is clear with cappuccino (this is espresso with heated foamed milk), then the term “frappe” is familiar to only a few: it refers to a thick milkshake with ice cream and the obligatory addition of ice.
A must because frappe is translated from French as “chilled in crushed ice.”
The Frappuccino recipe was not developed by Starbucks. In 1992, The Coffee Connection owner George Howell was looking for ways to keep his summer sales going.
To do this, he flew to Seattle, where he became acquainted with the trend of local coffee shops creating iced drinks. Returning to Boston, the businessman tasked his marketing manager, Andrew Frank, with coming up with a new cocktail that would become a feature of The Coffee Connection, and he succeeded.
Frank took a frozen yogurt machine, put coffee, milk, sugar and ice in it to create a creamy drink. The manager gave him a name in the Italian style.
Thanks to this invention, George Howell was able to expand his chain to 23 locations and create a kind of coffee revolution in the habits of Boston.
But in 1994, Starbucks bought the business from Howell, and with it the rights to Frappuccino.
Interesting Facts:
- after acquiring the rights to this one, I changed the recipe and started preparing it in a blender;
- as of 2012, the company's revenue from sales of the drink amounted to $2 billion per year;
- To avoid trademark infringement, coffee shops around the world produce and sell a similar product under other names: “Dankachino”, “Mokachino”, “Cappuccino Explosion”, etc.
How to Serve Dessert
The cocktail is served in glass glasses with a volume of 300-500 ml. They are pre-cooled in the freezer. The top surface is decorated with whipped cream. It would also be a good idea to top the drink with syrup. Be sure to place a straw in the dish.
Frappuccino has won the love of not only coffee lovers, but also those with a sweet tooth. This is an incredibly delicious cocktail. Anyone can prepare it. The main thing is to follow the instructions indicated in the recipe. Thanks to this, you will be able to achieve excellent results. It is quite possible that this dessert will become one of your favorites.
The history of iced coffee
It would be a mistake to say that iced coffee is a modern invention. Back in the 17th century. The Dutch poured freshly roasted aromatic grains with ice water and thus transported them around the world.
In the 19th century The French, who fought in the Algerian fortified city of Mazagran, began to add cool water to coffee instead of milk (it quickly spoiled in the heat), as well as lemon and cognac or brandy. This cocktail was called “Mazagran”.
Cold coffee gained mass popularity again in the 60s of the 20th century. In Japan, it was sold in cans in vending machines located on every corner.
According to one version, in 1957, at the International Fair in Thessaloniki, Greece, a Nestle campaign employee mixed instant coffee, sugar and ice water in a shaker. This is how the world's first frappe was born, which since 1979 has been considered the national drink of Greece and is known throughout the world.
Today frappe is both an independent drink and a way to serve cocktails regardless of the presence of coffee in them.

What is a mocha frappe?
A mocha frappe is a blended coffee drink flavored with chocolate.
A traditional mocha is a latte with chocolate syrup or chocolate powder added. Since a coffee frappe is basically a latte but blended, a mocha frappe is just a chocolate version.
You may notice that some mocha or other flavored frappes are heavier on chocolate than coffee, but this varies by location.
What is an espresso frappe?
An espresso frappe is a frappe made with espresso rather than instant coffee. An espresso frappe can also be any espresso drink mixed or shaken with milk and ice long enough to create a foam.
This term probably exists in regions where frappe is not yet made with espresso. As we said above, frappe was originally made from instant coffee, and this is still the preferred method in some places.
However, you should note that if you order a coffee frappe in the US, it will almost certainly be made with espresso—unless you work at Starbucks, which typically uses specially brewed, strong coffee instead.
Starbucks offers an Espresso Frappuccino variety made with both drip roast coffee and an extra shot of espresso.
Is cappuccino sweet?
Traditional cappuccino does not contain sugar. The flavor is well balanced as the sweetness of the milk softens the bitterness of the espresso without adding sugar.
Of course, the cappuccino can be personalized. Flavored cappuccino is especially popular in North America.
If you order a cappuccino at your favorite local coffee shop, you'll likely have a wide variety of flavors or sugars to choose from, some sweeter than others.
Some traditional stores suggest adding cinnamon or unsweetened cocoa to your cappuccino. Although they are not sweetened, they add different flavor notes to the drink.
Properties and calorie content of the drink
Frappuccino has a general tonic effect on the body and increases performance due to the nutritional value of its ingredients. 1 serving of this dessert contains at least 400 kcal, so its consumption is considered a complete meal.
However, doctors do not recommend enjoying it more than once a day: from 60 to 150 g of caffeine in combination with cream, milk and sugar put a strain on the body.
The modern coffee industry provides a replacement for high-calorie ingredients: instead of cow's milk, for example, you can order a cocktail made with coconut and soy milk or remove sugar.
The drink is quite high in calories.

Beat the ingredients until the ice turns into fine crumbs. Whip the cream. They must first be cooled by keeping them in the refrigerator for 1-2 hours. In this case, the product cannot be frozen, otherwise it will peel off and the cream will not work. Whip the cream with a mixer. First, set the minimum speed, gradually increasing its number. Beat the product until the mass retains its shape. Pour the coffee into a glass. Decorate with cream on top. Serve cold.
Important note! In order for the ice to be transparent, you need to make it with chilled boiled or still bottled water. If you freeze tap water, it will degrade the taste of the cocktail.

Expert opinion Yuri Gorbunov barista, work experience – 7 years
Frappuccino is one of the most popular coffee drinks. This is not surprising, because it has a pleasant taste. It is ordered mainly in the summer due to its refreshing effect. To prepare it, I mainly use Arabica coffee. The fact is that such grains contain a large amount of aromatic oils. It is thanks to this that the drink acquires a unique taste and pleasant smell. I recommend using Robusta for those who love strong coffee. It should be taken into account that the Frappuccino turns out to be completely unflavoured. I do not recommend using Liberica. The point is that this is a low quality variety. It gives the drink a pleasant aroma, but its taste leaves much to be desired. Thus, Arabica is an ideal choice for Frappuccino.
Main varieties
Since 2002, Starbucks has released a new Frappuccino every spring, matching flavors to the colors that hit the runway. And connoisseurs and regular customers of the coffee shop know how to get a special, secret cocktail (for example, inspired by the new “Joker”).
The variety of flavors is due to the use of toppings, syrups and other additives with which the dessert is prepared. However, there are 3 main types of Frappuccino (besides the classic one), which are in great demand among buyers.
Easy
It is prepared with skim milk and cream substitute with a minimum percentage of fat content, which reduces the calorie content of the drink by 54%, the fat content by 15%, and carbohydrates by 52%.
Light coffee with skim milk.
Cafein free
It is prepared according to a traditional recipe, the only difference is the use of a decaffeinated base.
Frappuccino cream
It is prepared without coffee, on a creamy base, which consists of sugar, thickening agents, flavorings and other ingredients. This is a dessert in its purest form - it resembles pudding due to the fact that the milk is foamed with a special cappuccino maker.
There are also 2 more types of cold cocktails:
- Vegetarian - for its preparation, dairy products are replaced with plant-based analogues.
- Tazoberi - Instead of espresso, Tazo tea is used as a base. Juices and fruit toppings are also added to the cocktail.

Contraindications and recommendations
Frappuccino is recommended for people with hypotension, poor appetite, and migraines. The caffeine contained in the dessert has a positive effect on blood vessels and stimulates lung function.
The drink is contraindicated for hypertension, mild excitability, and a tendency to insomnia.
You should drink it carefully if you have a sore throat and refrain from eating dessert before donating blood (the test results may be distorted).
If a person is allergic to components or lactose intolerant, the ingredients can be replaced. The modern coffee industry allows the use of skim, lactose-free, soy or coconut milk.
Description
General information:
- Frappuccino
is a type of iced coffee that appeared in 1995. - Currently, the most active distributor of Frappuccinos is the StarBucks coffee chain. She also owns the rights to the name and recipe
- The Coffee Connection chain was the first to sell such a drink, but it was later absorbed by StarBucks
- The StarBucks company in its establishments invites visitors to create any drinks from available ingredients, and then the bartenders prepare them themselves
- The name Frappuccino is derived from the words “frappe” and “cappuccino”. A frappe is any drink that is based on crushed ice rather than water. A real Frappuccino will contain pieces of ice immediately after preparation.
There is a recipe for jelly frappuccino. It consists of adding coffee, prepared in the form of jelly, to a mix consisting of milk, sugar and ice.
Varieties
- Classical.
To prepare it, we used 200 grams of ice, a tablespoon of sugar, 100 ml of cold milk and doppio coffee - double espresso. It differs from classic espresso in that the percentage of coffee powder in it has been doubled - Light Frappuccino.
It is prepared in the same way as the classic one, but contains half as many calories. - Moka Frappuccino
- classic Frappuccino with chocolate syrup added - Crème Frappuccino
is perhaps the most amazing type of Frappuccino. And all because it contains no coffee! The basis of the drink is a cream consisting of sugar, thickening agents, and flavorings. The second part is milk whipped until foamy. - Light cream frappuccino
. Due to low popularity, it lasted only six months on the market. - Cafein free
- Vegetarian Frappuccino
, in which regular milk is simply replaced with soy milk - Tazoberry Frappuccino
is a caffeine-free drink, the ingredients of which are Tazo tea (the signature tea of the Tazo company, which was purchased by the Starbucks chain in 1997) and a mixture of raspberry and other fruit and berry juices, as well as ice. - Greek frappe
The Frappuccino contains syrup. Therefore, the name here depends on the syrup itself:
- Crimson
- Cherry
- Currant
- Strawberry
- Caramel
How not to spoil the taste:
- Frappuccino will be more delicious if the coffee is brewed from fresh beans.
- Be sure to wait until the coffee has cooled before preparing your Frappuccino. It is best if it cools at room temperature.
You can also put it in the refrigerator, but never in the freezer. - If the coffee does not cool down and you start adding ice, the taste will deteriorate greatly.
- The degree of sweetness of the drink and its richness depend on how much sugar and syrup you add.
- The percentage of fat in the milk determines how high in calories the drink will be.
- When adding confectionery additives, try to ensure that they are in harmony with the taste of coffee and do not exaggerate with them.
Versions [edit]
Currently available to edit
Below is a list of typical versions of each type of Frappuccino.
Decaf edit
At consumer request, Starbucks baristas can create Frappuccinos with decaf espresso shots instead of using the caffeinated instant Frappuccino Roast coffee.
Cream edit
The coffee-free base was created to make a drink called Frappuccino Blended Crème. Sample menus include Creme Mocha, Creme Caramel, Vanilla Bean Creme and the Serious Strawberry Frappuccino. There is also a chocolate Frappuccino. Any syrup or sauce can be used to make Frappuccino cream. Crème Frappuccino contains very little or no caffeine.
Non-dairy alternatives edit
Frappuccinos made with soy milk became available in stores in the United States and Canada in 2010. In January 2011, Starbucks introduced this option in Australian stores, and the option has since become available in other countries. Starbucks has also introduced coconut and almond milk options.
Modifications edit
Frappuccinos may include additional ingredients, including espresso shots, flavored syrups, chocolate chips, and flavored powders. Consumers can also customize the consistency of the Frappuccino by ordering light or extra ice. Any Frappuccino can have additional syrups, espresso shots or various other modifications for a possible surcharge.
Former edit
Cappuccino (or cappuccino)
leader in popularity among coffee drinks. Delicate and at the same time strong cappuccino is loved all over the world. Many people mistakenly believe that it is prepared with cream. In fact, it is a drink based on espresso and milk.
There are many legends about the origin of cappuccino. According to one version, Italian monks of the Capuchin Order began preparing this type of coffee. Like all Italians, the monks were very fond of coffee. But in those days, coffee was banned by the church and was considered the drink of the devil. The Capuchins came up with a trick: he announced that white foamed milk gave the devil's coffee softness and sweetness, thereby removing sin. The monks whipped the milk by hand for a long time to get a tasty and beautiful foam. Of course, they also brewed coffee by hand - many centuries remained before the invention of special machines.
A modern cappuccino is prepared like this: a third of the espresso is poured into a porcelain cup, then the same amount of hot milk is poured. The top third of the cup is filled with milk foam, whipped with hot steam. A teaspoon is always served with a cup of cappuccino - first they use it to eat milk foam, and then drink the coffee itself.

Company's mission
Today, Starbucks coffee shops can be found in 67 countries, and the total number of outlets already exceeds 22 thousand. The total number of network personnel is 140 thousand people.
Starbucks sells organic coffee, espresso-based drinks, a variety of hot and cold drinks, sandwiches, coffee beans, tea, and accessories for preparing and serving coffee.
But company CEO Howard Schultz isn't talking about coffee.
This is one of the company's missions - to provide a comfortable place to relax. The most surprising thing is that the atmosphere of a coffee shop and its menu may differ depending on the country or even the city in which it is located:
- American Starbucks may not have a caramel Frappuccino on its menu.
- In Hong Kong you can buy freshly squeezed guava juice in branded bottles
- Caramel syrup is missing from Canadian menus
- In Vienna, visitors take off their shoes and climb up onto the sofas
- In Germany there are pancakes on the menu
- Dubai Starbucks is a real lounge-cafe where you can completely relax in chic leather chairs
- In New York you can find yourself in a cafe with a completely businesslike atmosphere, where everyone is working on their laptop.
- In Japan, Starbucks coffee shops can be found directly in bookstores
Despite the common attributes - Wi-Fi, green aprons, a table with spices, each Starbucks is a small, cozy world of good coffee lovers in its own way.
Today we will talk about unusual menu items that can only be tried in certain countries of the world. Go!
