A cup of coffee that will charge you with productive energy for several hours, eliminate any problems in the body, help you burn fat and build muscle mass - all this is bulletproof coffee.
The essence of the drink is as simple as possible - mix coffee with butter and mix well. Somehow the oil enhances the effects of caffeine, stimulates attention and lowers blood cholesterol. This armored coffee tastes like a creamy latte. The drink has become a popular choice among fans of the keto diet and people who practice fasting. This is an excellent breakfast replacement, but not everyone considers the taste of this coffee great.
History of armor-piercing coffee
The founder of the drink and the company of the same name “Bulletproof coffee” is Dave Asprey, an American entrepreneur and biohacker, also known for his book “Brain Biohacking. A Proven Plan to Maximize Your Brain in Two Weeks.”

An American from Albuquerque, born on October 30, 1973, always had problems with excess weight (136 kg), until in 2004 he visited India, Tibet and was inspired by the traditional drink of that area - tea with butter (massala). , noting even then that when drinking this drink, the brain is activated, not to mention the fact that there is no such problem as hunger.
After returning from his trip, Dave created his Bulletproof coffee through trial and error, based on coffee, oil and medium chain triglycerides (MCT oil). In 2011, the biohacker launched his brand Bulletproof, and since its launch, its sales have been constantly growing along with its popularity, both in America and abroad.
Bulletproof Diet
Asprey developed his approach to nutrition based on the keto diet and described it in the book The Bulletproof Diet. He does not limit himself in calories, but monitors their sources. It gets the most energy from fats - 70-75%, 20% from proteins, and only 5% from carbohydrates. The macronutrient ratio changes when a biohacker goes on a cheat meal. On such days, he deliberately increases the amount of carbohydrates to speed up his metabolism. Another feature of Esprit’s diet is the intermittent fasting regime according to the “16/8” system: he fasts for 16 hours, and can eat for 8 hours.
Asprey gets fats, the main source of energy on the Bulletproof Diet, not only from butter, but also from wild fish and meat. In general, he agrees with scientific research findings about the dangers of processed and red meat. But he still considers grass-fed meat healthy: he writes that it contains more healthy fatty acids and fewer mold toxins than meat from animals fed grain or soy.
The Bulletproof Diet helped Asprey lose 45 kilograms - and without much exercise, as he himself says. Neither a low-calorie diet nor hard training for 90 minutes a day gave such a result. However, his diet has been repeatedly criticized for ignoring research on the dangers of low-carb diets and high amounts of saturated fat in the diet [, , ]. In addition, the “Bulletproof Diet” prohibits legumes and whole grains, which allegedly promote inflammation in the body. However, reputable organizations like the American Heart Association consider them a much healthier choice than coconut oil or red meat.
How it works
Our brain's favorite fuel is ketones, natural substances produced by our bodies to break down fat and produce energy. When you eat healthy fats, you increase the production of ketones.
Our brain loves ketones - it's like putting the best gas in an expensive car after years of using crappy fuel. Everything starts to work as it should.
On the other hand, when we eat sugar or starchy carbohydrates in the morning, our brain begins to use glucose instead of ketones for energy, which is like supplying the cheapest fuel to your Ferrari. It works, but not to the level it could, and the engine breaks down in the long run.
What is Grass-Fed Butter?
Grass-Fed butter is made from the milk of cows that are fed only grass, not soy or feed corn. Due to this, butter does not contain harmful fats and helps normalize cholesterol levels.
First thing in the morning, I make my version of butter coffee, then go to yoga or use the energy of this magical drink to be productive. As a rule, this drink satiates you for 2-3 hours - just before late breakfast or early lunch. For some Bulletproof fans, the oil drink completely replaces breakfast, which is quite acceptable from the point of view of nutritionists. That's why butter coffee is a must-have part of my mornings.
Grass-Fed oil has the following beneficial properties.
- Contains conjugated linoleic acid, a healthy fat that helps regulate cholesterol, high blood pressure, and helps reduce body fat. Plus, this acid helps improve brain function and reduces the risk of developing nervous diseases.
- Contains an optimal proportion of omega-6 to omega-3 amino acids, which helps strengthen the body at the cellular level and reduce internal inflammation.
- Improves metabolism and digestion, accustoms your body to the process of burning excess fat.
- Contains vitamins D and K2, which strengthen bones and teeth.
Today, Bulletproof Coffee is on the menu of most progressive healthy eating establishments, especially the paleo eating style. The average price for one cup is $5–6. The good news is that a simplified version of butter coffee can be easily made at home. Ready to try? Here's my Bulletproof Coffee recipe.
What ingredients are needed
- Freshly brewed black coffee - any preparation method will do.
- Butter or ghee, it is very important that it is without salt.
- MCT Oil – you can purchase this oil on Dave Asprey’s website or buy a similar oil, for example, on the Iherb website. It is important to look for a product that is high in caprylic acid.
Short quality sleep
In 2000, Asprey conducted an experiment: for six weeks he divided sleep into several periods during the day, but came to the conclusion that polyphasic sleep is for masochists. After unsuccessfully searching for a suitable sleep schedule, he had to create his own program. Now he sleeps only 5 hours: he falls asleep between 2:30 and 4:30 in the morning, and wakes up at 7:00 or 7:30. Thorough preparation for bed helps you get enough sleep.
During the day, Asprey diligently protects himself from blue light, which can disrupt circadian rhythms: he wears glasses with yellow lenses, and hangs red LED lamps above his computer to compensate for the light from the screen. In the evening he closes the windows with thick black curtains and covers everything that glows with black tape. Before bed, he takes “raw materials for regeneration” - relaxing amino acids, magnesium and potassium. Then five minutes of breathing exercises to improve heart rate variability.
Already going to bed, Esprey turns on psychoacoustic compositions from the Pzizz application: in them, sounds are selected to treat insomnia, improve sleep quality and make it easier to wake up. Instead of a regular alarm clock, it uses the Sleep Cycle app, which wakes you up during REM sleep and thus allows you to avoid sleep inertia and wake up refreshed. If he has less than four hours to sleep, current comes to the rescue: a transcranial pulsed current stimulation (CES) machine sends electrical discharges into his brain in the range from 0.5 to 1.5 Hz. Asprey says he can get two hours of sleep three nights in a row and still be productive.
Bulletproff coffee recipe
- Make a cup of coffee in any way convenient for you (brew it in a Turk, French press, Aeropress, funnel or even a saucepan) - volume 200 ml.
- Add 1-2 tablespoons of MCT-Oil or coconut oil to your coffee.
- Add 1-2 tablespoons of butter without salt to your coffee.
Beat all this in a blender for 10-20 seconds; if you don’t have a blender, a good thermos will do, in which you can put it all and shake it thoroughly. The effect will be the same.

Coffee wrap recipes for weight loss
Classic coffee wrap
The most popular recipe that does not require the use of many components. All you need is ground coffee (10 g) and hot water. Coffee powder is poured with water until a paste-like consistency is formed. Once the mixture has cooled to a comfortable temperature (while remaining warm), it should be applied to the body. Then wrap the film and lie under the blanket.
The duration of the process is from 20 minutes for the first time to 1-1.5 hours. When finished, you need to take a warm shower. To reduce the risk of skin irritation and dryness, you may need a moisturizer.
Coffee with cosmetic clay
Cosmetic clay is also added to the ingredients from the previous recipe (in the same amount as ground coffee). Both components are poured with water and mixed until thick and homogeneous. The resulting mass is evenly applied to the desired areas of the body, wrapped in film, and placed under a blanket.
The duration of the procedure is maximum 2-3 hours. The result will be soft, elastic and smooth skin, as well as a noticeable reduction in volume and cellulite.
Coffee with lemon juice
This is the perfect blend for dull, loose and saggy skin. It is especially effective to carry out the procedure according to this recipe in winter or spring, when the skin especially lacks the necessary substances. The mixture is also good for dry, dehydrated or overcooled skin.
Components:
- coffee;
- olive oil;
- lemon juice.
Coffee is diluted with oil in equal proportions, then juice is added (a few drops are enough). The gruel in the form of a paste is applied evenly to selected areas of the body. The film is wound on top. Ideally, you need to lie under a warm blanket for 2-3 hours. After this time is over, take a shower.
Wrap-scrub
Immediately double action against cellulite and excess volume. The effect is achieved through additional peeling.
Required ingredients:
- coffee (1 tbsp);
- Epsom salt (1 tbsp);
- cinnamon (2 tsp);
- basic coconut oil (2 tbsp).
As usual, the mixture is applied to the skin and wrapped with film. But first you need to massage selected areas of the body in a circular motion for a few minutes using this scrub.
Pay special attention to your knees and elbows. After wrapping yourself in film, lie down under a blanket or hot towel for 30-60 minutes.
Then remove the film, rinse off the scrub in the shower, and apply body lotion.
Slimming wrap with clay
To prepare the wrap according to this recipe, you need:
- cosmetic clay (2 cups);
- coffee (0.25 cups);
- water (2 l);
- essential extracts of lemon or rosemary (2-5 drops).
Coffee needs to be boiled in water for several minutes, cooled, and mixed with the rest of the ingredients. Apply the resulting paste to the skin and wrap it with film.
You can wear a bandage belt under the film - the effect will be even stronger. The wrap should be left on the body for about an hour. During this time, you can do household chores, lie under the covers, or even sleep. Then rinse the mixture with warm water and, if necessary, lubricate your body with moisturizer.
Coffee and honey wraps
Among other mixtures, this particular combination is considered one of the most effective. The procedure with these components “sucks out” toxins as much as possible, smoothing the skin and removing inches from problem areas. There are several options for this wrap.
Coffee-honey anti-cellulite wrap
To prepare this mixture you need honey, cosmetic clay, red pepper (all components 1 tablespoon each), ground coffee (50-150 g), any essential oil (a few drops).
Honey heated in a water bath is mixed with the remaining ingredients, the mixture is allowed to cool, and then applied to the desired areas of the body. Wrapping the film on top and wrapping yourself in a blanket, you need to hold the mixture on your body until a noticeable burning sensation appears. Then rinse it off under warm water. The effect of this procedure is noticeable after the first time.
Classic wrap with coffee and honey
Components you will need:
- honey;
- coffee;
- optional and for better results – cinnamon.
The ingredients are mixed with each other in a ratio of 3:2:1 and heated. After applying the resulting mass to the body and wrapping it with film, you need to wait 20-60 minutes, then rinse off in the shower.
Radical experiments
Every day, Dave Asprey lies under UVB lamps to benefit from sun exposure, freezes in a cryotherapy chamber and shuts down his senses in a sensory deprivation chamber. The most controversial intervention to which he subjected the body was the transplantation of stem cells from the bone marrow: into the joints, scalp, face and penis. “The greatest experiment in biohacking,” Asprey calls the procedure without false modesty. This is because it was the most extensive stem cell treatment that a person has undergone at one time.
Although the effectiveness of the stem cell transplant has not been proven, Asprey is confident that it made him younger and stronger. So he intends to repeat the procedure every six months. And yet he admits: sometimes experiments don’t work. One day, a biohacker covered himself with ice cubes to improve the quality of his sleep, but woke up with 15% frostbite on his body and pain that did not go away for several weeks. Another time he exposed himself to infrared light to see if it would help him learn faster, but the procedure only distorted his speech for a few hours. And when he tried a low-carbohydrate diet, borrowed from the Eskimos, he suffered an extreme form of ketosis.
Bulletproof coffee and diet
It would seem that what could coffee, butter and diet have in common? But perhaps we will surprise you. Particular attention to bron-coffee appeared at the peak of the popularity of the keto diet, which is based on a high-fat and low-carbohydrate diet. And it is precisely these characteristics that our drink fits into.
A serving of this drink contains about 450-500 kcal, which is quite enough for breakfast. At the same time, the feeling of hunger will not bother you for the next 3-4 hours. But, of course, it’s worth maintaining a balance in everything. If you constantly replace your breakfast with Bulletproof coffee, it will not lead to anything good. The drink can be used when “entering” ketosis; it will help and “teach” the body to work on its fat deposits. At the end of the first week of fasting, it is better to transfer the drink from the first half of the day to the second, and also combine it with proper nutrition and physical activity.
