All types of Carte Noire coffee and how to choose the best

This coffee is said to have French charm and German character, but the largest number of fans of the brand live in Russia. Supplies of Carte Noire to the Russian Federation actually exceed deliveries to the brand’s native country. This is explained not only by the difference in territories—twice as many people live in Russia as in France—but by consumer interest in the brand.

“Carte noir” (translated as “black card”) is produced by Mondelēz International, whose share in Jacobs Douwe Egberts (JDE) in 2017 was 26.5%. The brand is represented on the market in all types: coffee beans, ground, instant and in capsules. The most popular, including in France, is instant - due to the high level of quality and taste, which is as close as possible to a custard drink. It is interesting that, according to statistics collected by the analytical department of JDE, even those coffee lovers who prefer “Turkish” coffee, when a thick, scalding drink is washed down with ice water, choose instant Carte Noire.

History of origin

In 1965, French coffee expert Renne Monnier decided to start producing coffee under his own brand. He created the blends himself and soon introduced the first blend to the market, called “Grand-Mere” - “Grandmother”. So Monier decided to honor his elderly relative, who raised him and instilled in him a love of coffee.

Attention!

The new brand quickly gained popularity not only due to the high quality of coffee, but also due to a well-chosen advertising campaign. An undoubted success was the slogan, which can be translated into Russian as “Granny, make me delicious coffee!” It immediately attracted attention, was remembered and loved by customers.

In 1978, Monier released a new collection, called “card” (“Carte”). It includes three blends:

  • Rouge (red);
  • Bleu (blue);
  • Noire (black).

“Carte Noire” immediately became a sales favorite. It was deservedly appreciated, because the best varieties of Arabica from elite plantations were used to create it. Manual roasting allowed us to fully reveal the unique taste and aroma. The marketing approach again played an important role: the packaging of the coffee was no less elegant than the drink obtained from the beans. Buyers liked both the black and gold design of the pack and the original idea with a transparent strip that allows you to see the contents without unpacking.

Attention!

Carte Noire was promoted by Jacques Segal, one of the most famous French marketers and image makers, leading advertising campaigns for prominent political figures.

In 1983, the Carte Noire brand was acquired by Klaus Jacobs, the grandson and successor of the founder of the coffee empire Jacobs Douwe Egberts. Under his leadership, production grew - production of not only beans, but also instant coffee under his favorite brand was started.

Historical reference

Carte Noire was created by the French gourmet and authoritative expert in the world of coffee in France, Rene Monnier. The idea of his own brand came to him in 1965, and the master called his first blend Grand-Mere (translated into Russian as “grandmother”). The slogan that sounded during the advertising campaign: “Grandma, make us aromatic coffee!” brought a smile, was quickly remembered and contributed greatly to the popularity of the new brand. And in 1978, Rene Monnier presented a “card” collection - Carte Rouge (“red card”), Carte Bleu (“blue card”) and Carte Noire, which immediately became a favorite.

The success of the brand was predictable: Arabica beans collected, processed and roasted by hand from elite plantations (Arabica Exclusif) had a captivating aroma, a rich, multifaceted taste with a whole bouquet of shades and a pleasant long aftertaste with the bitterness characteristic of invigorating drinks. The first batch of the drink, despite the high price, sold out in a matter of days, in which the memorable packaging also played a significant role.

An intriguing black bag with a transparent strip through which the grains were visible, and an entwining gold ribbon, the name of the brand and the image as a whole were invented by the famous French image maker Jacques Segal, who was called “the one who makes kings.” Jacques Segal received this nickname thanks to successfully implemented projects to create an image in the advertising campaigns of presidents - Francois Mitterrand, Alexander Kwasniewski, Jozsef Antall.

Carte Noire opened a new page in coffee classification, thanks to it a new quality standard emerged - Premium Arabica.

In 1983, when Carte Noir was at the peak of its popularity, the brand was acquired by the enterprising grandson of the founder of the Jacobs company, Klaus Jacobs, and immediately launched a large-scale advertising campaign. Jacobs head of marketing Tennessee Williams came up with a new slogan and plot for a romantic video that ended with the words: “This is how Carte Noir is born - coffee that awakens desire...”. A year later, Carte Noire was already a leader in sales in its price category.

In the late 90s, Jacobs, along with its brands, became part of Kraft Foods Inc. - an international concern for the production of packaged food products. And in 2012, the concern was divided into several subsidiaries, and the Carte Noire brand was transferred to one of them - Mondelez International. In 2015, the company became part of Jacobs Douwe Egberts.

Types of Carte Noir coffee

The Carte Noire product line includes bean, ground and freeze-dried coffee. The range also includes capsules for coffee machines. To choose coffee to suit your taste, it is wise to read the review of Carte Noir coffee types with descriptions and photos of packaging.

"Carte Noire" beans

“Carte Noir” beans are available in bags of 230 and 800 g. Medium roasting allows you to fully reveal the advantages of taste and preserve the delicate aroma. This drink is served in the best French coffee shops. The most popular in the line is the classic “Carte Noire Original”. Also available are “Carte Noire Espresso” and “Café Carte Noire Infiniment Décaféiné” with reduced caffeine content.

"Carte Noire" ground

Ground coffee is available in packages of 230 and 800 g. The line includes the same varieties as whole grain coffee. All Carte Noire products are characterized by a medium grinding degree, most suitable for preparing the drink in carob-type coffee machines.

"Carte Noire" soluble (sublimated)

In addition to bags, glass jars are used for packaging instant coffee. In terms of its taste, it is not inferior to natural, although it is characterized by greater softness. The most popular variety is “Original”. For lovers of decaffeinated coffee, Infiniment Décaféiné is suitable.

The range of instant coffee includes the following varieties:

  • Classic Velvety & Rich with a subtle citrus taste and light floral aroma;
  • Espresso with a tart aroma, chocolate taste and bitter aftertaste;
  • L'instant with light sourness and almond tones;
  • Millicano with a refined deep taste.

New to the line is the premium “Carte Noire Privilege”. This is a blend of ground coffee and instant coffee, which most fully reveals the taste.

"Carte Noire" in capsules or the "Tassimo" collection

The capsules are manufactured for JDE's branded Tassimo coffee machines, but are also compatible with Nespresso coffee makers. The collection includes 4 types:

  • Petit-Dejeuner Intense;
  • Noire Espresso Aromatique;
  • Long Delicate;
  • Long Intense.

Attention!

Coffee capsules from Carte Noir differ not only in their organoleptic parameters. They are designed for preparing drinks of different sizes, so buyers need to pay attention to this characteristic.

What is the trick to roasting beans?

Only the best Arabica varieties are purchased for coffee production. They are collected on plantations:

  • Asia;
  • South America;
  • Africa.

The secret of the ideal taste for which carte noir coffee is valued all over the world is a special roasting technology called “Fire and Ice”. The grains are strongly and quickly heated to the required temperature and then abruptly cooled.

The shock process preserves the amazing aroma of each grain in its original form and reveals a large number of flavor shades.

How to distinguish an original from a fake

To avoid buying a counterfeit product, you must pay attention to the packaging and, most importantly, the logo. It is always written only in Latin. It is extremely important to check the spelling, the brand name is spelled "Carte Noire".

In addition, the following signs may be evidence that there is a fake on the counter:

  • too low price or excessive discounts;
  • uneven letters, drops of glue, crooked labels;
  • discrepancy between the barcode of the product and the country of origin.

If in doubt, ask the seller for product certificates. Insurance against purchasing a fake will be a purchase in a company store or on the Carte Noire website.

Lovers of an invigorating aromatic drink have long appreciated Carte Noir. This is premium coffee that fully justifies its popularity.

Coffee "Carte Noire" - reviews

Yasya

I tried instant coffee of many different brands, the tastes are basically the same, not memorable, but I liked this coffee, but for me it is very strong, I already make weak coffee for myself, 1 teaspoon is enough for a cup. I even liked the Black Card more. The taste is somewhat similar, but still there is a difference, I often buy it at a discount - it turns out to be a very good deal. With cream yum-yum. And by the way, I noticed that it invigorates perfectly. Sometimes, when you want to sleep, a cup of the Black Card instantly interrupts your sleep))).

When buying coffee, I don’t pay attention to the composition, I don’t drink it very often, I prefer to choose according to taste. I took this coffee more than once - it seemed like nothing. But lately I’ve been impressed by the “Black Card” Premium. On par with its competitors - the most worthy when it comes to price and quality. And it tastes pleasant, without unnecessary astringency or acidity, with a light, non-intrusive aroma. And the price is normal, cheaper than many other instant ones, and superior in quality.

Kate

Personally, I don’t like this coffee; for me it’s too strong and bitter. I prefer a more neutral option - this is Black Card. Excellent coffee with a pleasant, memorable aroma. Light, but at the same time rich in taste. Dissolves well and quickly. And nothing extra. Very similar to natural coffee. And if it’s with cream, I really like it. High quality and not expensive. But to each his own. Coffee is a drink that you have to try for yourself and then draw your own conclusions. I told my opinion. I hope someone finds it useful.

In general, I'm not a fan of coffee drinks. You always need to add a huge amount of sugar to coffee, and I don’t like sugar at all. But I work around the clock and therefore at night, in order to somehow cheer myself up, I have to drink this drink. Many people recommend that I drink energy drinks, but I think that if I have to choose, coffee is a much better option. I bought this coffee recently on the recommendation of a friend. It is very fragrant and very invigorating, which is undoubtedly important for me. I also like it because it is not as bitter as all the others I have tried. Therefore, I add less sugar there, which is a huge plus for me. I really like the packaging. She is very beautiful and comfortable. I recommend it to coffee lovers and those who, thanks to their terrible work, are forced to stay awake at night.

I love this coffee out of all the instant coffees we sell. It’s really stronger than others, because once I managed to drink a cup of coffee after 6 pm, and after that I didn’t sleep a wink until 6 am. Although usually, after other soluble brands, I at least get some henna, I sleep peacefully and don’t toss and turn. I like its taste, it is not sour or bitter, but moderately balanced. I haven’t drank this foreign-made coffee, but I’m sure it’s of excellent quality there too.

In general, I like to brew coffee in a Turk. But when I’m short on time, I drink Carte Noire. This is the only worthy replacement for freshly brewed coffee!

I love coffee very much, I can’t live without it, it’s a pity we rarely buy it, my husband doesn’t allow it often because I drink coffee quickly. When I was helping my mother at work, they had Carte Noire coffee there and I decided to try it, and now I don’t like other coffee at all. This coffee is very tasty, it has a rich aroma, and the coffee is not bitter. I like to drink it with milk and a spoonful of sugar, because I can’t do without sugar.

We drink Carte Noir with the whole family. Really like. And we got hooked on it a year ago - my husband bought it at Auchan “to try” and now we only buy it.

Of course, it costs 2 - 2.5 times more than some Nescafe, but it’s really worth it! The taste is very rich, cannot be compared with anything. This is probably the best freeze-dried coffee that is currently in stores. We have this option when we don’t have time to make coffee.

We also bought ground Carte Noire coffee for the coffee maker, real coffee! When the coffee is brewing there is such an aroma throughout the apartment, it’s just a fairy tale!
