Senseo coffee machine Inside the second generation Senseo coffee machine (click to see legend) Senseo pods
Senseo

registered trademark for coffee brewing system from the Dutch company Philips and Dow Egberts. The system known as coffee pods (called pads in some countries) is used for brewing coffee.

Story

The system was first introduced to the Netherlands in February 2001, followed by Belgium and France, Germany/Austria/Denmark, the United Kingdom and the United States, and Australia (in chronological order).[1] Senseo was designed by WELL Design.[2] According to Philips, ten million machines and four billion pads were sold worldwide by 2005.[1] by 2008 more than 20 million cars.[3]

A new model of the Senseo machine, Senseo New Generation, was introduced in select markets in 2007. This updated version allows the user to adjust the height of the mechanism to accommodate larger cups or mugs, has an indicator light feature that shows when there is not enough water for two cups (unlike the previous model which showed if there is enough water left for one cup), has larger water tank and has an option that allows the user to adjust the amount of hot water used per cup.[4]

The Senseo Latte Select machine was introduced in 2008.[3] and has a separate milk tank. The machine uses the same coffee capsules and can produce three different types of coffee with milk foam: Cappuccino, Caffe Latte and Latte Macchiato. However, these three options are not real beers, since the machine cannot produce real beers. espresso, but rather regular coffee mixed with milk foam. The machine can also produce regular coffee and has three strength settings.

In 2009, the Senseo Quadrante was introduced with a new brick design. The coffee pods remain the same, but the capsule holder is designed differently. The Quadrante Series also features a larger water tank and allows for taller mugs with three different cup holder mounting positions.

In November 2011, Sara Lee announced that she would no longer sell the Senseo product line in North America.[5][6]

Senseo pods can still be used with compatible Hamilton Beach drip coffee makers.

In January 2022, the North American Senseo electric compatible coffee maker became available to the general public again; mostly from online sources such as Daves Coffee Pods. The new Senseo Original XL HD7810 / 65 II Black USA is an upgrade from previous models and includes the following features:

  • 40 US fl oz (1200 ml) XL water tank;
  • Intensity selection buttons, allowing you to prepare a cup of coffee with a more or less intense taste;
  • Senseo's Coffee Boost technology increases the number of water dispensing holes to 45, which the company claims will provide a more complete coffee extraction.

History and features of the brand

Senseo Philips coffee machines first appeared in the Netherlands in 2001. Four years later, 10 million models and 4 billion filter bags for them had already been sold. Later, machines for making lattes and cappuccinos were released. Among the company's latest developments are coffee makers that simultaneously support the technology of preparing coffee from beans.

The manufacturer warns that it is impossible to get full-fledged espresso in Senseo machines. Italian coffee is prepared in carob coffee makers, in which water is forced under high pressure through finely ground beans. Coffee pods do not have such a fine grind, and the machines have a different filtration mechanism. The taste of Senseo is close to the drink that is obtained in drip coffee makers.

Senseo blends consist of Arabica and Robusta beans grown in Brazil and Central America. The exception is single varieties from certain regions. The grains are processed wet, so the finished drink acquires a delicate taste and rich aroma. Raw materials are transported in sealed bags to preserve the freshness of the product for as long as possible. The degree of roasting depends on the variety.

A characteristic feature of Senseo pods is their size, which differs from the common ESE format in a larger direction and is at least 55 mm. For this reason, Senseo filter bags can only be used in original coffee machines, as well as in drip-type machines from the American company Hamilton Beach. The capsules are made from oxygen bleached filter paper and can be recycled into garden compost.

Mixtures

Main blends: mild, regular, mocha, dark roast and extra dark, plus a decaf variety. Blends vary in overall taste across countries. Special blends from Colombia, Kenya and Brazil are blended with Arabica coffee from select plantations and cost slightly more than regular blends. There are also coffee bags with added flavors called Vienna, Rio de Janeiro, Seville and Marrakech. More recent varieties available in select European markets include cappuccino, caffe choco and espresso. Douwe Egberts Senseo has launched Hot Choco in Belgium and the Netherlands. The latest launches in Germany are the Guten Morgen breakfast blend and the Italian Caffé Crema blend. In France, Maison du café Senseo launched Noir Subtil.

Patent disputes

A European Patent Application for the purpose of "protecting the shoe holder and shoe assembly",[8] i.e. the Senseo coffee capsules, was filed on September 30, 1998 by the Dutch[9] EP 0904717 is granted to the European Patent Office on July 11, 2001[ 9] The European patent has come into force in a number of Contracting States of the European Patent Convention, including Belgium.

Dispute in Belgium

On February 20, 2004, the Court of First Instance of Antwerp, Belgium, ruled in a claim between three Belgian coffee suppliers, N.V. Fort Coffiebrandery, SA Cafés Liégeois and NV Beyers Koffie v Philips and Douwe Egberts over a European patent and decided that other coffee suppliers are allowed to produce and sell coffee pods suitable for Senseo. The creators of Senseo used their patent to obtain an injunction against the sale of coffee capsules by other coffee brands, and those others responded by seeking a declaratory judgment of non-infringement. ]

One consideration the Belgian judge made was that the coffee capsules already existed. This ruling ended the monopoly on Senseo coffee capsules, and after this ruling, almost all coffee sellers in the Benelux country started producing coffee pods. Antwerp's decision affects patents on the capsules, but does not affect patents on the Senseo machine itself.[ citation needed

]

An appeal in court changed this patent issue, and the new decision was that other coffee makers infringed the European patent in Belgium.[10]

Revocation by the European Patent Office

In the meantime, the European patent was opposed before the European Patent Office by a number of companies, including Kraft Foods[9] and on August 30, 2006, Sarah Lee's EP 0904717 Senseo pillow cover was completely canceled by the European Patent Office.[8] Suzanne Rotteweel, spokeswoman for Sara Lee in the Netherlands, said:

We are very disappointed as we have invested a lot of time, energy and money. It's a shame when you can't get some of that investment back. (...) this ruling means that we no longer have protection for our patent in Europe.[11]

Interesting Facts

The company pays a lot of attention to ensuring that coffee does not lose its properties during storage. The pods are packaged in thin plastic boxes with an additional layer of foil. The process takes place in an atmosphere devoid of oxygen, which is replaced by nitrogen. As a result, the pods retain their taste and aroma for two years.

Philips produces a number of devices that allow you to prepare drinks in Senseo models without using pods. The long-lasting Coffeeduck filter is designed for ground coffee and can be used several thousand times. There is also a device for making filter bags yourself.

Interesting facts
